Political Action
Hong Kong Article 23 Protest

Here are pictures from the Largest Pro-Democracy protest in Hong Kong History. July 1 2003

This is bigger than any Anti-War protest I've gone to in the states. It was estimated 500,000 participated in this despite the extreme heat and the government even giving away free movie tickets and a soccer game.

Article 23 is a proposed amendment to the Hong Kong Basic Law (like the US Constitution) that would increase the power of the government in Hong Kong to curtail free speech and other rights, including giving police the power to search without warrant (sound familiar to the PATRIOT ACT?) in order to bring Hong Kong more in line with Communist China. Some more spectacular photos from the protest, putting mine to shame. Click here

The front of the march seem here from Pacific Place Mall. There were thousand more to come

The police. Luckily no one was arrested

The protest caused a huge traffic jam and the amount of people caused several major roads to be closed. The trams were stuck in traffic. Even the MTR (subway) was filled to max.

Onlookers everywhere. The first poster is a picture of Tung Chee hwa in Baby outfit. Bottom says "Tung Chee hwa Step Down"
