Tall Wood Larkspur
or
Mountain Delphinium
Delphinium occidentale
The name "delphinium" means "dolphin flower", because of the shape of
the bud. This plant grows three or four feet tall, and is very beautiful and
showy. It has dark purple blossoms.
Another species, the Low Larkspur (Delphinium nelsoni),
grows lower down on the foothills. It is a smaller plant. Its blossoms are
similar, but are a lighter color. Both species are poisonous to cattle.
