Heather pushed through the large double doors, searching the empty hallways for someone to help her. It was still early morning and few staff people were around. The front desk on the second floor was vacant also. Frustrated, she walked around behind the desk and picked up the phone. Several buttons were flashing, so she pushed one. Hello?

Could someone please send down another roll of EKG graphing paper please?

Heather looked around her surrounding again. Theres no one here but me, and I dont work here. In fact Im looking for a patient,

Oh, The voice said. Im sorry. Who are you looking for, maybe I can help. Im sitting here in front of a computer-

Nick Carter, She said. Hes my fianc,

Hold on a minute. Yes, Hes in room 475.

 Thank you so much,

No problem. Im sorry for the inconvenience,

Thank you, She said again before hanging up. She ran to the elevator and headed for his floor.

The doors opened and she stepped out walking over to the nurses station. Two women who appeared to be in their thirties both looked up. Hi,

Hi, Heather said. Im looking for Nick Carters room. He was brought in here earlier tonight-

Yes, Nurse DeVries sighed. The young one,

 The young one? Heather repeated.

Yes. Nurse Cordice smiled. Young and handsome. My husband used to look like that-

Is he okay? Heather snapped, immediately calming herself down. Im sorry. Im just worried-

Thats okay. To answer your question, we think hes fine. Hes still in surgery-

 Surgery?! What for?

Well, he was in a serious car accident, and there was some internal bleeding, and I do believe there are quite a few broken ribs, but other than that we really wont know anything else until we get his chart.

How long has he been in surgery? She asked.

About an hour, she should be done soon and then hell be in recovery for another hour or so, before they bring him here. So youve got a good hour to two hour wait,

Thank you, Heather said quietly, turning and taking a seat in a nearby waiting room. Both nurses watched Heather sit in the plush chair and slump down, burying her face in her hands. It only took minutes before she was crying. Ms. Cordice went over to her, gently rubbing her back. Hell be okay, honey, She said assuringly. He had on his seatbelt, and thats what probably saved his life-

This is all my fault, She cried. He left because of me-

No. This isnt anyones fault. He just lost control of the car, and I hate to say it but it was a good thing he was the only person on that stretch of the road, or he along with other people would have been hurt and or killed.

Heather looked up at the older woman. Is there someplace I can get some tea or something?

Sure Ill get it for you, She smiled standing up. And I know its probably the last thing on your mind, but it is still the middle of the night, would you like to go lay down?

Oh no, She said. Im fine thank you. Ill just feel a lot better when hes back in his room. Things have been tense around our house lately and this-

 Is not your fault.

Heather nodded and hugged her. Thank you,
