4th Annual Stewart B. McKinney Award Event
The Nat’l Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty established the Stewart B. McKinney Award to honor those who have advanced solutions to homelessness.

The award pays tribute to the legacy of the late Representative Stewart B. McKinney, who was a primary sponsor of the landmark legislation that provided assistance to the nation's homeless. Four months before his death, he spent a night outside in 20-below weather to raise public awareness about homelessness. NLCHP's award recipient is Tipper Gore, whom we will honor for her active and longstanding advocacy on behalf of homeless Americans. For more information and sponsorship details please email [email protected] or phone the Law Center, 202-638-2535 ext. 212.

The Civil Rights Project advocates against criminalization in multiple ways. The Law Center has published various informational fact sheets as well as six reports analyzing the trend of "criminalization" laws in the United States. In addition, the Law Center has filed legal briefs around the country supporting homeless people's challenges to such laws. The Law Center also works with groups across the United States to provide technical assistance and implement constructive alternatives to criminalization. Finally, the Law Center serves as an information source to individuals and groups on local legal resources for homelessness issues.
What can you do?

NHC Fact Sheet # 16
Excerpt-"While the causes of homelessness are complex, there is much that an individual or community group can do to help. No matter what your skills, interests, age, or resources, there are ways you can make a difference for some men, women and children who are homeless. Volunteer work, advocacy efforts, financial or material contributions and continued self education are all important and needed as we work to a solution."
