TIMELINE 1978- General Daud is overthrown and killed in a coup by leftist People's Democratic Party. Conservative Islamic and ethnic leaders object to social changes and begin an armed revolt in the countryside. 1979- Power struggle between leftist leaders in Hafizullah Amin and Nur Mohammed Taraki in Kabul won by Amin. Soviet Union finally sends in troops to help remove Amin from power. . 1980- Babrak Karmal, leader of the People's Democratic Party Parcham faction, is installed as ruler, backed by Soviet troops. Anti-regime resistance inte nsifies, the US along with Pakistan, China, Iran and Saudia Arabia supply money and arms to Mujahideen to figh off Soviet forces. 1985- Mujahideen come together in Pakistan to form an alliance against Soviet Forces. Half of the Afghan population is estimated to be displaced by the war.Many fleeing to Neighbouring countries. 1986- The US begins supplying to the Mujahideen with Stinger missiles, which enabled them to shoot down Soviet helicopter gunships. Babrak Karmal is replaced by Najibullah. 1988- Afghanistan, USSR, the US and Pakistan sign peace accords and the Soviets begin pulling out troops. |
