Braindead (Dead Alive) (1992) Peter Jackson's 1992 blood drenched comedy shocker comes from the height of his career. Lionel is a Mama's boy and has never kissed a girl in his life. He is forced to look after his overbearing mother and put up with her evil ways and maniacal ponderings. On a trip to the local general store however, Lionel falls in love with Paquita, the till worker. Previously she had been told by her Grandmother that the one she will love will be shown to her by a sign, and this sign is made when Lionel knocks over a tub of pencils by accident. Paquita organises with Lionel to go on a date to the zoo, but on their trip, their romantic escape from Lionel's mother is interupted when a rat monkey, captured at the beginning of the film by a zoo-ologist, bites Lionel's mother. Soon, his mother falls into a state of bad health and eventually becomes a flesh eating zombie who manages to devour an entire dog in one memorable scene! As her skin sags and her health eventually leads to her death in the hallway, Lionel calls the nurse, but one her emergeancy call, she falls victim to Lionel's mother's zombifying wrath and eventually, Lionel is forced to look after both his zombified mother and nurse! Finally, the situation is discovered and Lionel's mother is buried, but not for long as she revives from the undead once more and takes out three street punks at the cemetery as well as the Priest, who eventually 'gets it on' with the nurse and they produce a zombie baby! From there on, the situation becomes ever more desperate, and when Lionel's bigamist uncle drops in and discovers his 'murderous' activities, Lionel is forced to hand over the house to keep his freedom. However, it all goes horribly wrong when a whole party kicks off and the undead held in the cellar escape and wreak havoc on the party, turning all the guests into flesh eating zombies. As a result, many, many people die in hilariously brilliant ways and the best use for a lawnmower is displayed in a blood soaked finale which is concluded with the most monstrous vision you've ever seen! This is a brilliant movie with loads of gut wrenching gore as well as side-splitting laughs a minute. A true insight into Jackson's warped imagination, this has to be his best work. Using the typical over the top graphic death scenes and his odd ball take on society, Jackson makes this a truly incredible movie you'll want to watch over and over and over! A classic! Brilliant special effects, classic dialogue, gut-tearing laughs and surprises that will leave you tearing your own face off in absolute awe of this fantastic inclusion to the zombie/comedy genre. Classic all the way, just absolutely brilliant! Trivia: Peter Jackson, the director, plays a cameo of the Morgue Assistant. The blood gush rate for the lawnmower scene was 5 gallons per second! As the mourners enter the church the organ music is in fact "Sodomy" from Meet The Feebles (1989), the film that came prior to Braindead. Every single shot in the original screenplay is in the movie. The movie is totally uncut in Britain, much to many's bemusement. The fact that the comedic element levelled it all out was the clincher for the BBFC to leave it uncut. Meanwhile, in other countries where video nasties are left intact, Braindead was cut! Taglines: "There's something nasty in Lionel's cellar - His family!" "Some things won't stay down... even after they've died." "You'll laugh yourself sick!" Filmed in: New Zealand Wellington, North Island, New Zealand Quotes: "Lionel!
