A Personal Reflection
My name is Makwa 'logwa I am from Gwa 'yi, Kingcome village, origin of the Dzawada'enuxw people.  As an aboriginal, I have experienced storytelling both as 'narrative' and as 'drama' throughout my entire life.  Some learned experiences I have with narrative storytelling include the history of songs, dances and family origins.  I remember my grandparents always telling me stories regarding cultural roots, values, beliefs, and the history of crests and art.  I have experienced storytelling as 'drama'  within the bighouse, by participating in and witnessing traditional songs and dances.  Singing of traditional songs has always been of interest to me. I have learned many songs by translating them with elders.  Every song tells a story and has meaning.  With direction of my grandfather, within my bighouse responsibilites, I have composed four songs in my life time.  I am most happy when teaching the children our songs and their meanings in our bighouse.  Through storytelling I have learned to accept responsibility, respect myself, elders,  nature, and see that all living things have their place in this world. It has contributed to my health by increasing my self-esteem, instilling pride and a sense of connectedness to the community and the universe.  I hope my assistance in creating this website, contribute to increasing the viewers knowledge about other cultures and their ways of knowing about health - Tania
Spirits Rising,  1999
In the Kwakwak'awakw winter ceremonial I own a dance called the Tuk'wid.  In this dance a woman appears. W hen questioned, she calls up her supernatural powers.  Powerboards or spirit boards are one form of supernatural power that a tuk'wid dancer may show. As I have recently acquired the 'Ma Ma Ka', this is a position of responsibilty, I will have to pass my tukwid on to my daughter or niece, as I can no longer perform it.
