MORE KEY FEATURES
What’s New and Different
Cross Country vs. V70 (Model Year 2001)
The 2001 Cross Country is an entirely new Cross Country
built on the P2 Platform. While it shares components with its sister, the All-New V70,
there are many items that distinguish this vehicle from it. The following features,
both interior and exterior enhance the distinctiveness of the Cross Country from the V70.
Their in-clusion results in a rugged, athletic vehicle – one that blends the benefits of an
SUV without giving up the comforts and versatility of a traditional wagon.
Exterior
Front/Rear Bumpers with Cladding on Wheel Arches and All Four Doors:
- (Slate or Umber depending on exterior color).
Aside from protecting the Cross Country in rough terrain, the cladding adds a distinctive character, while
the dark color of the door cladding gives the illusion of greater vehicle ground
clearance.
Soft Nose
- The front bumper extends over the grill as an
important exterior distinction as it adds height to the front bumper reinforcing a strong, broad front treatment.
Grill
- Large horizontal squares in graphite with the
bezel and traditional Volvo diagonal in Brightwork.
Foglights
- Large, round integrated front foglights are
unique to this vehicle. Light distribution was designed by computers to optimize lighting in fog, rain, and snow.
Roofrails
- These standard rails have more mass and stand
taller than V70 rails. They were designed specifically to compliment the Cross Country’s rugged exterior
treatments.
Front Skid Plate
- This standard item is made of aluminum,
measuring 3 mm thick. While a practical item on roads less traveled, it also serves to reinforce the Cross Country’s
truck-like features.
Mirrors
- Taller and wider than standard P2 mirrors in a
Graphite color, they’re size is reminiscent of those found on our SUV competitors.
Cargo Side Window Insert
- The color of this ‘boomerang’ shaped insert
matches the exterior color, and is inverted compared to the All-New V70. Adding width to the C pillar and shoulder of the Cross
Country.
Ground Clearance
-
8.2 inches.
-
1.7 in. greater than 1st generation Cross Country.
Wheels and Tires
- The Cross Country features larger wheels and
tires than that of MY00. The larger, deep treads significantly adds grip to these tires without
compromising ride comfort and handling.
Interior
Leather Steering Wheel (Optional)
- Leather steering wheel cover is color
coordinated to the interior upholstery. Therefore, if the leather seats are brown, then the leather used on the
steering wheel rim will, likewise, be brown.
Note:
When VNS is ordered from the factory, S80 steering wheel is used
and the entire wheel is coordinated with the interior base color (see Interior
Section)
Leather Upholstery
- Unique stitching on the seams of the seat and
door panels fashioned after those used on maritime sails.
- Color coordinated door panels
-
Front Seat Storage Pocket (Leather Only)
Unique net pocket as the second of two storage
pockets behind the front seats.
- The first storage pocket is in upholstery
material and color.
Note:
Cloth/Vinyl seats have only the first storage pocket
40/20/40 Rear Seat
- Designed to enhance the versatility of the Cross
Country, this unique seat permits the entire middle section (backrest and cushion) to be removed. Thus,
larger equipment can be stowed safely and securely within the security of the vehicle. The benefit is that the integrity of two outboard seating positions
is not compromised as they would be if one section of the 60/40 seat is folded.
- Unique accessories (Electric Cooler Box,
Removable Softbag, etc.) can be positioned in this middle section to create a very versatile environment.
Floor and Cargo Mats:
- Five in total.
- Reversible textile/rubber cargo
mat means that the cargo area can always be kept neat and clean.
Front Grab Handle
- Referred by some as a "holy cow-bar"
this is tastefully integrated into center armrest and runs along the side of the center tunnel, this handle offers the
front passenger something to hold on to when road surfaces become a bit rough.
Mechanical / Cross Country Comfort Chassis
- Optimized for comfort without sacrificing
performance, the shock settings are softer in the Cross Country than in the V70’s Comfort Chassis.
- Springs, shock absorbers, front suspension
geometry and links differ (in length and packaging) from the V70 due to increased wheel and ground clearance.
AWD with TRACS on all 4 Wheels
- Tracs replaces the rear-locking differential on
the first generation Cross Country, and is used to control wheel spin when it occurs.
Certification
- The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) has agreed with Volvo that the P26L can be classified as a Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle (MPV)
under their rules and regulations, due to the fact that the P26L contains special
features for occasional use on unpaved surfaces.
-
Today, many of the federal motor vehicle safety standards for passenger cars, MPVs, and light trucks contain the same requirements; however, there are some
differences.
-
Certified as a Light-Duty Truck Class II for
Emission Requirements.
Key Product Features / Cross Country / Model Year 2001
Mechanical Systems / Engine
-
The Cross Country utilizes a transverse, five-cylinder engine that displaces
2.4 liters, as does the all new V70 2.4T. It features a light-pressure turbo resulting in
powerful torque across a wide RPM power band. While the above specifications are the
same as the first generation Cross-County, this engine undergone large scale
modifications -almost no moving part is the same resulting in better engine performance and
a smoother operation with less vibration.
- The all-alloy, five-cylinder B5244T3 engine
displaces 2.4-liter (2435 cm 3 ) and includes a light-pressure intercooled turbocharger. This all-alloy, 5
cylinder DOHC 20 valve (solid tappets) design produces 197 hp at 6,000 rpm, 210
lb./ft. @ 1,800 –5,000 rpm.
-
7HP/11 lbs. torque more than MY00 Cross Country
- The Continuously Variable Valve Timing is used
on the exhaust side only, with the primary task of reducing harmful emissions.
- The mass that is in motion inside the engine has
been reduced by 25%, making the engine lighter as well. In total, 9 lbs. have been shaved from the engine
weight. Smaller mass in motion means that there is less internal friction. Less
internal friction results in performance benefits, while both noise levels and fuel
consumption are reduced.
- Like the all new V70, the Cross Country utilizes
the Bosch ME7 Engine Management system, and fulfills requirements to meet Federal emission LEV
standards.
Transmission - AW55-50 with Geartonic
-
A 5-speed automatic transmission with Geartronic will be the only
transmission offered for the Cross Country.
-
Geartonic, allowing for a clutchless, manual
control of the transmission, puts control back into the hands of the driver when the mood so dictates.
-
Winter mode is featured on this transmission.
When activated, third gear is engaged which helps towards safer starting and driving when conditions are
extremely slippery, such as on icy roadways.
-
This transmission features ‘neutral control’.
Simply put, when the gear selector is in
‘Drive’, the vehicle will not move forward as much as it did with
previous transmissions.
Suspension and Chassis
-
While the Cross Country is built on the same platform as its other P2
siblings- there are some suspension and chassis differentiation. Like the all new V70, the Cross
Country has approximately 50% more torsional rigidity than its predecessor. Simply
put –it has greater structural integrity causing it to be more resilient to shakes and
rattles. And, since the wheel suspension is mounted to that frame, it means the wheels are
held from getting into an undesirable angle or position. This provides for a
consistent and predicable behavior.
- Due to its low center of gravity and unique
chassis architecture, the Cross Country won’t compromise ride comfort with its increased terrain abilities.
- Tires
are larger and grooved for all road performance without sacrificing ride comfort or
suffering increased road noise transmission, as seen with some SUV competitors.
- You will undoubtedly notice its wider stance and
more aggressive appearance compared to its P2 siblings. The front track has been increased 2.3 inches
vs. the V70, which adds to the Cross Country’s stability and road handling-as well
as reinforcing a rugged image.
- The front and rear suspension architecture has
been altered due to the increased ground clearance. Springs and shocks have been elongated to accommodate the
Cross Country’s exquisite stance and increased ground clearance.
- The MacPherson Strut front suspension helps lead
the vehicle through the turns, providing excellent course stability, and is nearly identical to that of the
All-New V70. This set up produces very good directional stability when accelerating
and braking on uneven surfaces. The front stabilizer bar measures 23mm, while a 19mm bar is in the rear.
- The multi-link system, like the front
suspension, in concept, is virtually the same as the other P2 vehicles. However, modifications to the design of the links, the
struts have been elongated, and the entire rear axle has been moved back just about
an inch compared to the current V70 in order to accommodate the greater ground clearance and to give the larger tires more room.
- Rear suspension provides excellent control and
improved comfort by permitting a certain degree of rear wheel steer when cornering, and also provides
assistance in stabilizing when braking.
- The Cross Country’s shock absorbers have been
given softer settings than the V70’s Comfort and Dynamic Chassis’, hence the ‘Cross Country Comfort
Chassis.’
This provides a more supple ride in anticipation of rougher roads
AWD
-
In practice, the AWD system used on the Cross Country is nearly identical to
that of its predecessor. Under normal road conditions the system will split the power in
a 95/5 front to rear ratio. Power, upon demand, will transfer to the rear axle via a
viscous clutch. The transfer in this system is transparent to the customer and their
awareness that the system is operating is only from the light in the instrument
cluster. There are, however, some changes in how the system operates:
-
The AWD system has been supplemented with four
wheel TRACS. Unlike its predecessor which used a locking rear differential to control rear wheel
spin, TRACS is used to modulate the ABS braking system when wheel spin is detected
through the ABS sensors. So, if the right set of wheels begin to lose
traction, those wheels will be braked to recover traction while the left set of wheels
propels the vehicle. Activation of 4-Wheel TRACS occurs from starting speeds up to 25
MPH. The advantage in this system is the intervention of 4-Wheel TRACS is very balanced.
-
The design of the AWD system has been partly
modified. A smaller, lighter housing
around the final drive on the rear axle is made of aluminum - designed to
reduce weight of the overall system. About 26 lbs., in total, have been shaved from
the previous AWD mechanism.
Brakes
The Cross Country’s braking system features:
-
Disc diameter of 11.3" front/rear (286 mm
front/288 mm rear).
-
The ABS system includes Electronic Brake
Distribution (EBD), which regulates the
braking force to the rear wheels based on the weight of the cargo that is
being carried and the degree of braking. This results in optimal braking force.
-
The Cross Country can not accommodate any wheel
smaller than 15". It can, of
course, accept larger diameter wheels, such as the 16" wheel that is
standard for the vehicle.
-
The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) utilizes the
Continental/Teves brake system
and features 4 channel ABS, which is intended to provide increased steering
control and stability in adverse driving conditions. The 4 channel system controls
the brake pressure to all 4 wheels individually. The ABS control module compares each
wheel looking for wheel speed differences under braking. Should a wheel begin
to slow down beyond an acceptable level (i.e. lockup) - perhaps because the
Cross Country drove through some ice while braking - the ABS module will reduce the
brake pressure to that one wheel for it to start to gain traction and aid in
the steering and stability of the vehicle. Previous generation ABS utilized a 3 channel
system, which controlled the front wheels individually (2) and rear wheels as one
unit (1).
Electrical System - General
-
Like all P2 vehicles, the Cross Country’s electrical system features a
multiplex system nearly identical to that of the S80. It uses many of the same components,
such as the ECU, and also shares the software. Interestingly, the software is driven by a
configuration file that tells it what car it is in and how the software
should respond.
-
A multiplex system means there are considerably
fewer cables and connections in
the Cross Country which, in-turn, means improved reliability. The continuous communication between all the components and software adaptations also means
improved opportunities for the retro-installation of some electrical
functions.
-
The system also has the benefit of
self-diagnosis for all functions, including engine
management. Diagnosis of problems is easier, as is servicing. Information
about a fault or malfunction is passed on to the driver by indicator lamps and a
message display in the instrument cluster.
Exterior / Styling and Body
-
The Cross Country’s styling evokes immediate sentiments of a vehicle made
for demanding driving and adventure. And yet, it retains styling cues that make
it undeniably a Volvo. The wide shoulders, or "catwalk", running down
the length of the vehicle - the proud upright grill with the characteristic Volvo diagonal -
and, of course, the characteristic "V" down the center of the hood - just like its
P2 sibling, the all new
V70. However, the Cross Country differentiates itself aesthetically by
specific exterior design cues that are strictly unique for this vehicle:
-
Uniquely designed bumpers and body cladding on
the wheel arches and doors,
including Cross Country’s ‘soft nose’, in Slate or Umber, provides not
only an aggressive, athletic impression, but offers added protection against road
hazards.
-
The bumper material on the Cross Country, as
well as on all P2 vehicles, is PP-EPDM. ‘PP’ stands for Polypropen and ‘EPDM’ is an acronym for a
soft rubber compound mixed with the Polypropen. Advantages of this material:
-
Ease of manufacture.
-
It mitigates noise transmission, as it’s not
prone to flexibility in cold and warm
climates.
-
It has a very low tendency to rattle.
-
Visual impact of scratches are mitigated by the
addition of talc in the PP-EPDM
(at 6% of the material).
-
Cleans easily with Volvo’s Plastic-Rubber
Cleaner (Part Number 1161-477).
-
This water-based, environmentally friendly agent effectively dissolves dirt
and won’t leave a shiny finish.
Aluminum skidplate adorns the bottom of the
front bumper/air intake. Measuring 3 mm thick, the aluminum skidplate is centered, the top of which begins under
the large air intake disappearing under the front spoiler. Clearly visible, yet
with a smooth transition into the Cross Country’s aggressive bumper treatment,
this
addition is both functional and aesthetically complementary to the vehicle’s personality.
- Reinforced roofrails are standard on the Cross
Country.
-
Large, exterior mirrors in Graphite enhance the
rugged, truck-like imagery.
-
Large, integrated front foglights. Low mounted,
front foglights improves visibility in mist, fog and snowfall. A computer calculated reflective area provides for
maximum lighting. The unique foglights also enhance the ‘rugged’ look of the
front bumper.
-
Expressive front grille with large, graphite
rectangles serves as the background surrounded by a bezel of metal done in ‘Brightwork’ with a short,
traditional Volvo diagonal in the foreground, likewise done in ‘Brightwork’.
-
Front track has been stretched 2.3 (5.8 cm)
inches more than that of the All-New
-
V70 and 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) more than last year’s Cross Country.
-
Larger 16"x 7" Tellus wheels, with six
broad spokes cast an imposing presence. "XC" is etched into one spoke of each wheel. 215/65/HR16 Pirelli
Scorpion S/T All-Season tires provide the traction.
-
Ground clearance has been increased 2.3 inches
(5.8 cm), with two occupants, over the all new V70 and 1.1 inches (2.5 cm) greater than last year’s Cross
Country.
- Cargo window molding in body color raises the
shoulder, as opposed to the window molding of the V70 which is designed to lower its profile.
In addition the Cross Country shares these common design themes with the all
new V70:
- The rear lights blend the successful designs of
the S80 and the original V70 together to create a new look that evokes recollection of both successful
models.
-
The rear of the Cross Country slopes back gently
to create a distinctive shape, while sacrificing very little in the way of the pure functional nature of the
cargo area. Of course, the rear door is basically upright - again to ensure the vehicle
is as functional as it is attractive.
- The tailgate is manufactured from steel
reinforced polyresin glass fibre. It uses directional fibers for strength, while providing for lower weight and greater
freedom when it comes to styling. This "freedom" is evident in the sharp
edges in the recess surrounding the license plate; a design not possible with sheet steel.
Lighting
Active safety also includes seeing and being seen in poor visibility - or at
night. The light provided by the headlights is a very important safety factor. Being
able to see along a long stretch of the road ahead could be a decisive factor in certain
situations, just like being detected from the rear at a distance.
- Headlights utilize a free-form reflector with
optics in the outer lens to direct the light image; hence the ‘glass’ lens is not clear. Side turn indicators are
integrated in the headlight.
-
Front and rear foglights are standard equipment.
Low mounted, front foglights improves visibility in mist, fog and snowfall. A computer calculated
reflective area provides for maximum lighting. The unique foglights also enhance the ‘rugged’
look of the front bumper.
-
Following the V70’s lead, the Cross Country
features large tail lamps, to help improve visibility for vehicles approaching the V70 from behind.
-
Upon leaving the vehicle, one pull of the high
beam wand will trigger the Follow-Me-Home headlights (standard) to help light the path to the front door.
-
To help one see the environment around your
parked Cross Country, Approach Lighting (standard) illuminates puddle lights on the bottom of each exterior
mirror as well as the parking lights (fore and aft) and the interior courtesy lighting.
-
The new bulb failure system allows simultaneous
detection of more than one defective lamp.
Wiper Systems
- The front wipers include a variable intermittent
mode designed for those times when you need something in-between "on" and "off".
-
Regardless of whether they are switched on or
not, the rear wiper on the Cross Country will automatically swipe the rear glass for as long as the front
wipers are on, and the vehicle is in reverse.
Miscellaneous
- Windshield and sunroof shields more than 99% of
UV radiation from entering the passenger compartment.
-
Side windows shield more than 80% of UV
radiation. If the door glass is laminated, more than 99% is shielded, as the PVB in the
lamination is highly UV
absorptive. · Rear liftgate window shields 79% of UV
radiation.
-
Gas tank capacity is 18.5 gallons (70 L)-enough
to keep you going for a long time between inconvenient fill-ups.
Interior Styling and Comfort / General
The Cross Country interior expounds upon the elegance of all P2 vehicles by
incorporating
‘signature’ features only found on this special vehicle.
-
Unique to the Cross Country is an elegant,
optional leather upholstery. It features stitching along the seams of the upholstery and door inserts that were
inspired by the stitching adorned on boat sails.
-
The rim of the leather steering wheel is always
color coordinated to the upholstery color with a graphite center. When the Volvo Navigation System is ordered
from the factory, an S80 steering wheel is used and the entire wheel is the color of
the base interior. (See Chart under Interior Codes)
- The Cross Country’s unique floor and cargo
mats feature a thick, rugged, but interesting textile. The pile is reminiscent of a deep Burbur carpet adding to the
elegant richness of this interior while being consistent with the Cross Country
imagery. The cargo mat is reversible, incorporating a rubber underside to use when
carrying items that would surely mess the cargo area - coming home from, say, the home
center with 200lbs. of topsoil. Or, perhaps, one might have four pairs of wet
ski boots to lug around. This is another example of how our customers do not have
to compromise functionality for design.
-
The Cross Country shares the same instrument
panel and console with the all new V70, which are unique from any other Volvo product offering today, but, like
the exterior, the family resemblance is immediately noticeable – as in the
careful attention to ergonomics and comfort. The dash has a shape you might almost
describe as "streamlined". It slopes gently forward, rather than at
sharp vertical or horizontal angles. This gives the feeling of space, while not compromising
the secure feeling so typical when sitting in the front seat of a Volvo.
-
The driver’s comfort is the top priority for
the Cross Country. Therefore, the center console is angled slightly toward the driver to facilitate access to the
controls, but not so much that the passenger can’t comfortably turn a dial.
-
Like the other Volvo products, switches,
controls and other dash components have a soft outer coating, called "Softlack", for firm grip and positive
overall feel. They are presented in an Anthracite color to further soften the contrasting
surfaces and support a more luxurious interior.
-
A front passenger grab handle extends a
convenient and sturdy place to hold on to when the travelling becomes rougher. It is a metal bar that is tastefully
integrated into the front tunnel console. It’s a feature that has functionality on
roads less traveled, but also serves as a visual reminder that this vehicle is not just
for newly paved roads.
Seating
The Cross Country premieres a newly designed
rear seat, the three-split rear seat in 40/20/40 proportions. The center backrest removes completely to allow for
a wide pass through for stowing such items as skis and snowboards inside the
protective confines of the vehicle. The benefit over a 60/40 split seat is that the
40/20/40 pre-serves the integrity of the outboard seating, allowing two occupants to ride
comfortably with the extra gear. The center bottom cushion also removes very easily
allowing for the quick installation of Cross Country unique accessories, such
as the electric cooler box or removable Softbag.
- When the center backrest is
removed, a specially designed pocket is available that fits over the opening. The pocket mounts to the back of the rear seat, and is
secured on four corners. It features two zippered pockets and one net pocket
to stow loose items, but its primary purpose is to keep any cargo items from
being propelled through the opening in a sudden braking situation. The pocket has been
tested to withstand up to 132 lbs. (60 kg).
- The ‘Stop and Store Pocket’
will be included in every Cross Country with 40/20/40 split seats produced up to
August 26 as special gift from Volvo. After which, the pocket will be avail-able
as an accessory only.
- The Cross Country seats are what
you would expect from Volvo in terms of overall comfort. The seat cushions are designed to provide the optimum
support for a wide range of body types. The key is support for the legs and back, to relieve body fatigue out
of those long drives or the daily commute.
- The stitch and sew, plus the
addition of vinyl inserts of the standard upholstery differ from the standard upholstery of the V70.
- The front driver’s seat is
standard with 8-way power adjustment and three memory locations, as well as memory for the exterior
mirrors.
These memory locations tie to
the remote key-fob, so the seat starts and mirrors begin adjusting when the
door is opened, assuming the key-fob has been programmed. A lumbar support gently
supports the lower back.
-
A manually adjusted passenger
seat is standard for the Cross Country offering a full range of backrest adjustment, as well as height, front to rear position and
lumbar support.
-
An integrated child booster
system is not available for the Cross Country with 40/20/40 rear seats, but can be used with the 60/40 seating. The 60/40 rear
seat will be available in the late fall. Therefore, the removable booster cushion
is the only option available with the 40/20/40 rear seats. The booster cushion helps
position the shoulder and lap belt optimally. The booster cushions are
approved for children weighting between 33- 80 lbs. (15 –36.3 kg), and between 38-54
inches in height (96.5 – 137.2 cm).
Windows & Hatches
- As in the V70, the driver has full control of
all windows, locks and exterior mirrors from the comfort of the door panel. A rear window lockout is also mounted on
the door.
-
The front windows feature one touch auto-up/down
function. A firm push or pull
sends the window completely opened or closed. A gentle push or pull to the
first click allows the operator to position the window anywhere in between.
-
One touch, auto-open/close tinted glass sunroof
is a factory installed option. The
sunroof features both tilt and slide operation. The sunroof will
automatically stop at the "comfort" position, but can be opened further. The switch is
located within the roof-mounted console.
- All ‘one touch’ windows include an anti-trap
feature that is designed to immediately stop and open the window. It is designed to keep hands and other objects from
being caught between the window and the frame.
Passenger Area Storage
Possibly the simplest design will prove the most functional. Cleverly
designed items found in the V70 have been retained for the Cross Country because they offer
wonderful functionality. These items include:
-
The small peg on the left of the front passenger
head restraint, which offers a fast, easy place to hang a jacket or similar item. At this location, the item is
within easy reach of the driver, and won’t block visibility or back seat access - such
as an item hanging by a rear door.
The well thought-out glove box has several
features worth noting:
-
At the rear you will find a vertical slot that
is perfect for keeping the owners manual accessible and still out of the way.
- Two slots at the rear left corner of the glove
box helps keep a pen close at hand for the customer, while a clever slot at the top left keeps a
gasoline credit card always within concealed reach.
- What is left provides ample space for CDs,
cassettes or maybe a collapsible umbrella.
- The glove box is illuminated to aid in accessing
items, particularly at night.
- At the base of the center console, just in front
of the shift lever is a rubberized recess and clip to keep another pen close by without having to constantly
pick it off the floor after every turn.
-
The center console includes two integrated
cupholders that will accommodate a wide range of beverage container sizes. But if the driver doesn’t need all
of that space for cups, there are a number of unique accessories that can be easily
slipped into place, including an ashtray for smokers.
- A third front seat cupholder is located in the
dash to the left of the radio. This retractable unit pops out with a slight push and stores away just as easily.
The position of this holder keeps the beverage in easy view for an easy ‘grab’.
- Featured on the optional leather upholstery is a
front pocket - great for storing keys and other small items and still within easy reach of the occupant.
In addition to the above items the following will appear only on the Cross
Country:
- The standard cloth/vinyl upholstery will have a
single rear pocket in the cloth material. When the optional leather seating is ordered a net pocket is placed
in front of the leather pocket—rounding out the rear interior environment.
Cargo Area Storage
People who purchase wagons and SUVs alike, typically have the need for more
space
– usually cargo space. Maybe they need it because of their occupation, or maybe they need it for their active personal lifestyle. Many times they
only need the extra capacity on weekends, or for vacations - so they do not want to sacrifice the driving experience for the ability to haul in
those situations.
- Foremost is the flexibility and versatility of
the seat configuration. While most wagons and SUVs allow the second row seat to fold
down, Volvos go one step further as the front passenger seat also folds forward to accommodate those extra long loads.
-
The flexibility of the 40/20/40 split folding
rear seat means a number of different configurations are possible.
-
Configuration is an important part of the cargo
area’s versatility, but so are the many optional features available to help make best
use of the area:
-
Nylon Cargo Guard dividing the cargo from the
passengers.
-
The Grocery Bag Holder to keep packages in place
(cannot be
combined with 3rd
Row Seat).
-
The Steel Cargo Guard along with the vertical
divider and gate
makes the perfect pet carrier.
-
The Third Row Seat (described in more detail in
the following section) allows the flexibility of accommodating two additional children.
Miscellaneous
- The interior lights automatically turn on when
the ignition key is removed or the doors are opened.
-
The interior courtesy lights operate with a
delay "dim down" and "auto brighten-up". They are also accessed from the remote.
-
Three 12-volt receptacles are standard: in the
center dash console, at the rear of the middle console for back seat passengers, and cargo area.
Interior Systems / Climate Control
- The Cross Country includes a fully automatic
Electronic Climate Control (ECC) which helps regulate interior temperatures at a stable level. The system
helps to quickly cool down hot air and heat up cold air.
-
The ECC system features dual temperature control
to allow independent adjustment of the left and right side. The design is a representation from the S80
system, allowing for clear, understandable operation.
-
The climate system has several air outlets,
designed so that the fresh air is distributed around the compartment instead of being blown at high speeds in a
concentrated stream of air into the faces of the driver and passengers. This
allows for a more even temperature and comfort - much closer to what can be achieved
in the home.
-
An outlet in each of the B pillars, facing the
rear, enables hot or cool air to be directed toward rear seat passengers. That means the 2nd
row seat will reach the
desired temperature faster, rather than having to wait for the air to make
its way
back from the front. The individual, adjustable vent, unlike some
competitors, allow each of the outboard, rear seat passengers to have greater control over their
individual climate. The vents also help hasten rear window de-misting, and
helps keep them free from mist.
-
A single passenger compartment sensor, mounted
in the center console in the ECC panel, provides stable temperature control.
-
A light or sun sensor is integrated into the
center dash along side the security system diode. This sensor tells the ECC system when the vehicle is in direct
sunlight to help attain the proper passenger compartment temperature.
-
A recirculation mode can be activated to block
outside air from entering the passenger compartment to improve comfort, for example when passing through
poorly ventilated tunnels. Recirculation also helps to speed warming the
interior during the cold winter months.
-
Based on interior temperature, the air
conditioning mode will automatically switch the system to air recirculation to expedite interior cooling. It will revert
back to the fresh air setting after a short time.
-
A replaceable pollen/dust filter is standard to
effectively eliminate unwanted substances and is especially beneficial for people with allergy problems.
-
An Active Carbon Filter, available as an
accessory, can replace the pollen/dust filter to also help filter unpleasant gases and odors from entering the cabin.
Air Quality System- AQS (Option)
-
AQS is a new system, which, together with the ECC unit, offers a passenger
cabin virtually free from odors and pollutants.
QUALITY
A Cross Country expected to be
subject to more harsh treatment and wear than a traditional car or wagon.
However, the effects of this should not be visible. The vehicle should look just
as good after many miles in grueling situations and should function perfectly,
not least when the driver takes it to places off the beaten track far away from
Volvo retailers.
Volvo ’s high level of quality
is an invaluable asset. Extremely rigorous demands have been imposed on
the durability and service life of materials, the reliability of every function
and the finish of details and paintwork.
Quality is the result of a
comparison between expectations and experience. It is not simply a question of
purely material values but also includes the reception the customer is given by
sales staff, service staff and other contact personnel at the retail facility.
This plays just as decisive a part in the customer ’s evaluation of the of
Volvo ownership experience.
BODYWORK PROTECTED BY PLASTIC
The bumpers are completely
covered with plastic. The front and the sills are also covered with plastic.
This plastic provides protection from minor damage caused by stone chips or
protruding branches.
MORE FEATURES AND BENEFITS
SERVICE LIFE
- Galvanization of the body (to
a level of 70%), with a thicker coat of zinc on exposed parts and areas –
provides top-class corrosion protection.
- Engines with low internal
friction and strategically cast reinforcements and cylinder liners made of
cast iron – have the potential to work perfectly for many years and
countless driving miles.
- Adaptive management system for
ignition and combustion – reduces the need for service.
- Plastic fender liners –
protect the wheel arches from corrosion.
- High technology and precision
when it comes to material selection, sheet-metal pressing, body
construction, surface treatment and final assembly – produce a high level
of product quality.
ALUMIMIUM HOOD
The hood, which is exposed to
flying stones, is made of aluminum. This reduces the risk of corrosion, as well
as reducing the weight of the car body.
UNDERBODY GUARDS
An especially powerful protective
plate can been fitted under the car at the front. In combination with the high
ground clearance, it reduces the risk of damage to the engine and underbody when
driving on poorly maintained roads.
PLASTIC WHEEL WELLS
The sturdy wheel well extensions
protect the sides of the body and the edges of the fenders from stones thrown up
by the large, wide tires, thereby reducing the risk of corrosion.
COMPOSITE TAILGATE
The tailgate is made of
reinforced plastic to eliminate the risk of corrosion and reduce weight. The
lightweight tailgate is also easy to open and close.
MORE FEATURES AND BENEFITS
RELIABILITY
- Electronic management and
monitoring systems with diagnostic functions – reduce the risk of damage
as a result of incorrect use.
- High strength steel (HSS)–
makes the body-- work stronger without increasing the weight.
- PUR-bonded windows – give
the car body even greater rigidity.
QUALITY RELIABILITY
MUST WORK AT ALL TIMES
The new Volvo Cross Country is a
vehicle for adventure and discovery, which is fun to drive off the beaten track.
It is therefore especially important for the driver to be able to rely on his
vehicle – to know that it will function as expected in every situation. This
imposes particularly rigorous demands on the mechanical and electrical systems.
DESIGNED FOR GRUELING TASKS
Everything in the new Volvo Cross
Country has been designed to withstand driving in demanding situations. The
materials and design of the engines, transmissions and chassis components have
been chosen to comply with the most rigorous functional requirements and have
been tested while being monitored stringently in both real-life and laboratory
settings.
DIGITAL ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
The electrical system is based on
the digital transfer of data (multiplex technology). Central management units
communicate with different function modules in the vehicle. For example, the
adaptive automatic gearbox can be instructed to modify gear-changing
characteristics, and it does so instantaneously.
SYSTEMATIC QUALITY PLANING
The production process is
systematically planned, with detailed quality targets for every procedure. The
results are evaluated the whole time, to guarantee the highest possible level of
reliability in every function in the finished vehicle.
LESS WIRING
The multiplex network has fewer
wires and connectors. This helps to reduce weight and guarantee a high level of
reliability.
MORE FEATURES AND BENEFITS
APPEARANCE AND FEELING
- Automated spray painting in
dust-free booths – produces smooth, shiny paintwork.
- Metallic paint that is covered
with a transparent clear coat – produces a deep luster and a resilient
surface.
- Stone-chip-resistant paint on
the lower part of the bodywork – reduces the risk of damage caused by
flying stones.
- Precise fit between sheet-
metal sections – produces elegant joints between the parts of the
bodywork.
QUALITY APPEARANCE AND FEELING
FUNCTIONAL DESIGN
The interior and exterior have
been designed to provide top-class function and withstand harsh treatment. The
design of components and controls reduces the risk of incorrect use and
unintentional damage, as well as making the vehicle easy to keep clean. The
plastic guards on the body reduce the risk of minor damage.
INTERIOR MATERIALS AND SURFACE
STRUCTURE
The materials in the upholstery
and interior have been carefully chosen to retain their finish and freshness for
many years. Parts and surfaces are pleasant to touch and feel. The Cross Country
model has especially durable leather upholstery alternatives which enhance its
robust and resilient character.
THE SOUND OF QUALITY
Quality can also be heard. The
sound from the engine and gearbox must be "right ",as must the sound
made when using a control or closing a door. A great deal of work has gone into
ensuring that the sound experience in the new Volvo Cross Country meets the
customer ’s expectations. The rigid body, choice of materials, design,
dimensions and insulation all play a part.
ENVIRONMENT
How are we human beings dealing
with our precious natural resources? What can we do to reduce the harmful
effects our consumer society is exerting on the environment? These questions are
being asked with increasing regularity by both the authorities and private
individuals. This has resulted in increasingly rigorous demands being imposed on
industry and on carmakers in particular. What is Volvo doing to take its
responsibility? Volvo cars have been developed to protect both human beings and
the environment in the most effective manner possible. The choice of materials
and the design of the production process are based on extensive research. The
impact on the environment has been analyzed and calculated in detail. The
environmental impact the car imposes during
daily use is presented in Volvo
’s official environmental product declaration. Action is taken when the car is
first designed to facilitate scrapping and recycling. In conjunction with the
launch of the new Volvo V70 and V70 VOLVO CROSS COUNTRY, Volvo is introducing
PremAir ®, a concrete example of the way in which the company is assuming its
environmental responsibility.
- Effective optional cabin
filter with active carbon and a pollution sensor helps to keep the air
inside the vehicle clean and fresh.
- Engine with low internal
friction helps to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
- Aluminum engines reduce weight
and fuel consumption. The new RN-engine has lower weight than the previous
engine!
- Double Lambda sensors, more
effective catalytic converters and a powerful engine management system
result in very low emissions (in compliance with the EU 2000/LEV
requirements).
- Variable valve timing (CVVT)
on the exhaust side of turbo engines helps to reduce raw emissions.
- PremAir ® (patented surface
treatment on the radiator) transforms the ground-level ozone into oxygen and
reduces the formation of harmful smog in the air we breathe.
- Waterborne paint reduces the
use of solvents.
- Reduced use of PVC inside the
vehicle results in less film (known as fogging being deposited on the
windscreen. This PVC is of a quality with a low degree of harmful impact on
the environment.
- Allergy-certified interior
materials reduce the risk of ill health.
- Chromium -free leather
- The EVAP system traps and
burns gasoline fumes that evaporate after the car is parked.
- Plastic components weighing
more than 50 g are labeled for recycling, thereby facilitating sorting.
- Environmental product
specifications show how each Volvo model affects the environment.
- 10%of the plastic components
are recycled. This reduces the impact on the environment.
- Recycling is possible to a
level of 85%,thereby reducing the environmental impact.
- Freedom from harmful
substances such as CFC, asbestos, cadmium and mercury reduces the
environmental impact and the risk of allergies.
- Environmentally accredited
production process (in accordance with ISO 14001/EMAS) gives the general
public objective information about the effects on the environment.
