Manzanares to succeed McCullough

Assistant coach Ed Manzanares has been appointed John McCullough's successor as head coach of the NMHU men's basketball program, the university announced in July.

Manzanares had served as McCullough's top assistant throughout his four-year tenure and was promoted on an interim basis when McCullough resigned as of July 1. McCullough, who also coached at the University of New Mexico under Dave Bliss,  took a position as women's coach at Oklahoma Baptist, a job which allows closer access to his family and to medical specialists for his stepson Steven, who suffers from a form of arthritis..

It is the first head coaching job for Manzanares, who played high school hoops for hometown Escalante High before going on to graduate from UNM in 1994. The native New Mexican is also NMHU's NCAA compliance coordinator.

NMHU, ENMU, WNMU to play in Pit

New Mexico Highlands will join fellow intrastate NCAA II schools Eastern New Mexico and Western New Mexico in a series of men's basketball games to be played at University Arena, AKA the world-famous Pit, in Albuquerque beginning this season.

The first of a rotating three-year series will pit ENMU vs. WNMU sometime this winter as part of a doubleheader also featuring the host UNM Lobos.  Highlands will play each of their state rivals in 2001 and 2002.  UNM officials, including athletic director Rudy Davalos and men's coach Fran Fraschilla, invited the three schools back to the Pit for the first time since 1993, when the New Mexico legislature stopped mandating that the Lobos and New Mexico State Aggies play their small D-II sister schools annually.

Former Cowboy Hollingsworth joins bench

Andre Hollingsworth, who started at power forward for the Cowboys in the 1999-2000 season and helped them to a 15-12 record and the RMAC playoffs, will serve as assistant coach this coming season.
