Back to the Grove

If You Only Knew...
(what a little eye contact can do...)

While we all sit together,
     Smiles engulf the table.
You talk about being yourself.
You assume that we're all able.

As I return alone to my room,
The smile fades from my face.
It's so easy for you to be honest.
It's not so in my case.

Later, alone in a practice room,
Saltwater will meet ebony and ivory.
And I'll wish that you caught my expresssions,
So that you would really know me.

With a single word, I would open the door
And let you into my heart.
With three words more tenderly spoken,
You could tear my soul apart.
