No Fehr League - News and Notes at the Break

Harry Careys, Opportunistic Infections,Chico Heat, Cactus League Peelers, The Dogs of War, Janet Reno's Elianators, Oriole Connection, Gordon Wood, Winning O'Men, Cruisin' Mustangs, Fighting Irish

Doug Carey (Harry Careys)

What's going right: Edmonds has turned out to be the best $16 value in awhile. Castillo and Nevin look like they'll be longtime Harrys.
What's not right: Terrible trades have left the Harrys scrambling. Someone should put a muzzle on the Harrys' GM to keep him from wrecking the team more than he already has.
Hope for the future: No pitching to speak of, but the offense should be there for years to come with Nevin, Tatis and Castillo
Top reserve pick status: Corey Patterson. Looks like a bust now. Probably won't qualify after poor season in AA ball.

Bill Counts (Opportunistic Infections)

What's going right:: Ashby was dealt to Atlanta and Mantei got healthy.
What's not right: Injuries crushed Infections before May; Omar Daal has been one of the NF league's biggest busts. D'backs and Infections stuck with him now.
Hope for the future: Is Looper (3A) ever going to close? Will Jay Payton start somewhere next year?
Top reserve pick status: Eric Gagne. More valuable if he's dealt to the Other League at this point.

Bill Enos/Chris Farrell (co-owners, Janet Reno's Elianators)

What's going right: Lance Berkman can rake, and Andruw Jones is the real deal.
What's not right: Biggio forgot how to hit and Shane Reynolds is their staff ace. Biggio's stock fell so much this year, they couldn't even trade him at the deadline.
Hope for the future: Impressive offense next year: Womack, Andruw Jones, Cirillo, and Berkman.
Top reserve pick status: Berkman. Solid keeper for next year if he's a starter at Enron.

Barry Hallman (Chico Wildcats)

What's going right: Hoffman and Alfonseca should keep them in the hunt all the way. Series of good trades has helped.
What's not right: Burnitzplus, starting pitching isn't going to scare anyone.
Hope for the future: Vidro and Morris will be bargains for years to come.
Top reserve pick status: Traded most of his picks. First pick was Guillermo Mota, who looks like he's far down the list of potential Expos' closers these days.

Eric Johnson (Cactus League Peelers)

What's going right: Sheff is the man. Lima (6C) might still get traded to the Other League.
What's not right: Kreuter can't do it alone. Glanville and Reggie Sanders have disappointed. This team had way too many Coors pitchers to contend.
Hope for the future: More now after acquiring Stephenson (2A) and Dreifort (7A). Two good deadline trades for the Peelers.
Top reserve pick status: Armando Reynoso. Yawn.

Kirk Geary (The Dogs of War)

What's going right: How do the Dogs spell Franchise Player? Pat Burrell, 10R.
What's not right: Everything else, starting with Urbina and ending with Glavine (34D).
Hope for the future: There's always Burrell.
Top reserve pick status: Pat Burrell. Sometimes it pays to come in last.

Robb Lahs (Oriole Connection)

What's going right: Randy Johnson and McGwire have carried Oriole. Will it be enough to keep them in the money?
What's not right: Quilvio's injury and McGwire's injury status. Still doesn't have a closer.
Hope for the future: Will Oriole sign Johnson (33B) to a contract? Is there anyway to get out of Jose Hernandez's contract (8C)?
Top reserve pick status: Alan Benes. On the active roster, but hasn't produced enoughprobably won't be a keeper at this pace.

Mike Lloyd/Paul Schmitz (co-owners, Gordon Wood)

What's going right: Al Leiter seems like he should be 46, but he shows no signs of slowing down. Eric Owens is one of the league's best bargains.
What's not right: Hermanson and Kerry Wood have been frustratingly inconsistent all year. Same can be said for Ruben Rivera.
Hope for the future: Wood still looks like he could be a Cy Young winnersomeday. Owens will only be $1 next season (even with the exchange rate in Japan).
Top reserve pick status: Gookie Dawkins. Looks like a bust now that Larkin has re-signed in Cincy.

Greg OConnor (Winning OMen)

What's going right: Best starting pitching in the league, plus Vlad and Helton. Hard to believe they're not winning by more than five points.
What's not right:: Well, Elarton got off to a terrible start, but even that's been fixed.
Hope for the future: Wolf (5A) will be solid, but it's clear the O'Men are aiming for this year. Not too many low-priced guys on the roster now.
Top reserve pick status: Buddy Carlyle. Oh, well. Probably wouldn't have made the O'men roster this year, anyway.

Paul Kurian (Cruisin' Mustangs)

What's going right: Harnisch has turned his career around. Kile looks like a sure keeper.
What's not right: Stuck with too many B and D players at the trade deadline. Best bet is to hope Rocker returns to dominant form.
Hope for the future: Sure hasn't make it easy on himself.
Top reserve pick status: R. Washington. Sorrynot even sure who this guy is.

Tim Plate (Fighting Irish)

What's going right: Steve Kline, 3R. Derek Bell has come back from the dead and put together a solid year.
What's not right: Scott Williamson has been a mystery all year, and Terry Mulholland has been one of the Irish's best pitchers. Not a good sign.
Hope for the future: Five extra reserve picks next season, plus plenty of good, small salaries. Could be the early 2001 favorite if Kline is for real.
Top reserve pick status: Darren Holmes. We trust a new Irish scout will be hired before next year's reserve draft.
