Chico Wildcats and Cactus League Peelers:
Talkin' Smack

Cooter
Krueter goes 2-for-3 against Texas, June 7.

Giants-Dodgers. BoSox-Yanks. Peelers-Wildcats. Looks like the NF League's newest rivalry is already in midseason form. It started on draft day, when Barry (Chico Wildcats) predicted that LA reserve catcher Chad Krueter (1A) would mean the end of the Cactus League Peelers' (Eric) reign at the top. It's still early, but so far, it looks like Kreuter isn't bringing the Peelers' empire down yet. In fact, Hundley's injury has given the league's most notable player a chance to star lately. (Interestingly, last year's most notable player was also a catcher: Mr. Jorge Fabregas.) Check back here throughout the season for updated rivalry stats, plus input from the two owners (and anyone else who wants to contribute). Here's the latest wave of smack, featuring Eric's introduction of the Dodgers' infamous backup catcher. Plus, updated standings at the bottom of the page.

Updated 9/25: Chad Kreuter Scouting Report from Sporting News (via Eric)

Kreuter is an excellent backup catcher because of his understanding of the game and impressive defensive skills.

The 10-year veteran is a strong receiver. Kreuter sets up exactly where pitchers need him and provides a good target.

Kreuter's quick reflexes enable him to block balls in the dirt that would get away from many catchers. With Kreuter behind the plate, pitchers feel confident to throw any pitch in any situation. Kreuter also has a strong arm. Teams are reluctant to run against him because he throws quickly.

Updated 7/5: The Peelers Wheel Out the Cooter-O-Meter (from Eric)

The COOTER-O-METER: Through Jun 12, 2000

Season Stats .321 .538 4 13

STAT OF THE DAY (6/29/00): Kreuter has reached base safely in 30 of his 34 starts this season.

Posted 6/4: Introducing the Dodgers' starting catcher...Chad Kreuter! (from Eric)

With the Dodgers placing catcher Todd Hundley on the 15-day disabled list with a strained oblique muscle in his right rib cage, "it's Kreuter time." And boy does he respond!

Kevin Elster homered in the ninth inning and Chad Kreuter also connected (3, 3rd inning off M Hampton) as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the New York Mets 4-3 Wednesday night.

(Ed. note: Kreuter has an eight-game hitting streak, four less than his career best. Kreuter is batting .346 (9-for-26) with two homers and four RBI during the streak.)

Cooter
Krueter goes deep against the Mets, May 31.

Posted 4/23: Chico Wildcats unphased by recent developments (from Barry)

Wow, I didn't realize 19 AB's meant so much! Kreuter has gone 6-for-19(.313) with a homer and 4 RBI's so far. Well, the comparison is a little different three days later. Let's look at the stats of the Wildcats' catchers (and a couple wimp ass pitchers as well).

Rich Ankiel - .556 Average with 1 homer and 2 RBI
Kevin Tapani - .375 Average with 1 homer and 3 RBI (Maybe that's my problem -I should have drafted him as a hitter).
Mitch Meluskey - .233 Average with 1 homer and 7 RBI
Brent Mayne - .313 Average with 0 homers and 0 RBI (but how long can that last playing in Colorado).

Edge: Wildcats - Kreuter is being outperformed by two pitchers and one catcher and with Hundley playing better recently, Kreuter's number of games will likely decline over time.

Posted 4/20: Note to Barry (Chico Wildcats), from the Peelers:

Cooter Dodger backup catcher Chad (Cooter) Kreuter added a solo homer in the ninth off Billy Wagner. Let's take a look how Cooter is doing versus the Chico Wildcats catching core:

(Through games of Wednesday, April 19, 2000)

BATTERS BA HR RBI
Kreuter .313 1 3
Meluskey .217 0 4
Mayne .292 0 0

Not bad considering Cooter cost a buck and those other yahoo's cost $8 and $11 respectively.

Next year Barry, don't buy a magazine, buy my book!

FYI...Cooter Davenport ... Even though he is not a Duke, he is a Duke at heart. He is the Dukes best friend. He is a mechanical genius and can repair anything. He often helps get the Dukes out of trouble. His handle is: Crazy C. Bo and Luke painted the General Lee orange "because' it was the only color Cooter had at his body shop.
