No Fehr League: Geocities Help Guide

No Fehr League: Geocities Help Guide

Here's a good starting point for No Fehr owners interested in working on their team pages. I've compiled some notes written to other owners; hopefully they'll at least get you started. Feel free to write with questions or just check the Geocities site.

Once you're at the Geocities main site, you need to go to the "File Manager" page. Once you're there, it will ask you for a member name (which is "nofehr") and a password (which is "league"). Don't use the quotemarks on either one.

Then you'll be in the file manager for our page. There will be about 20 different files (or pages) listed; all of them are part of our site. To reach your team page, click on "infect.html", and click on "Edit" at the bottom of the page. Likewise, to reach our home page, you would click on "index.html" and then click on "Edit" at the bottom of the page.

Now that you're on your page, you can make any changes you want by using the codes you learned from the tutorial. It might be frustrating at first (I speak from experience), but you can always click on "Preview" at any time to see what the page looks like after your changes. If it doesn't look like you anticipated, chances are you're missing a code somewhere. Double check everything and you should be able to catch the error quickly...

Once you're satisfied w/your page, click on "Save", which will save your page and return you to the file manager. At that point you can leave the site...

As for: "I didn't see anything about using wallpaper," I'm not sure what you mean. If you mean "wallpaper" as a background texture, feel free to use it. I haven't used any background images yet because I'm concentrating on text now, but I will eventually. I'm still learning how to place images in the right spot...

To use your own files: For text, I've just been copying Word documents into the Geocities text editor (that's the text window you work in once you reach your page). For images, there is a place on the main file manager page (at the bottom) where you can upload images. I can tell you how to import images once you reach your page, but it takes a little longer. You can always click on my page ("harrys.html") to see how I did it w/the Harry Caray image.

Also, you can go to any website page (anywhere on the web) and go under "View" and then "Page Source" to see the HTML that was written to design that page. That's a great time-saver; it's also how I designed our baseball links page (I basically copied it from a league page from back east).

More notes: As for the images on some of the team pages, I didn't ask any of the owners before posting the images. I just visited a bunch of web pages (I found Eric's logo on the MLB site) and found some that I thought might go w/their team names, copied the image, and then posted it to their team page.

(Some of them might not make any sense. "I'm Idaho!", for example, may have nothing to do w/Idaho potatoes, but I figure at least there's something there for now. If Jeff would like something more relevant to I'm Idaho!, he can always let me know whenever.)

I thought more people would be interested in customizing their team pages, but so far that hasn't been the case, so I've sort of gone ahead and worked on everyone's (except Bill C., who is doing his own).

Anyway, the best way to get started on your page might be to copy HTML code from other pages. I get most of my ideas from visiting other rotiss league websites and then when I see something I like, I go under "View Source," copy the code and import it onto our site. Then I just customize however I want...

With that in mind, here's the code for the top part of every (updated) No Fehr team page that has an image. If you see an image on another site that you like, just click on the image (hold it for a second), save it to a folder on your desktop and then go into the Geocities file manager, where at the bottom it has a section where you can upload images. (It tells you how to do it.) Once you've uploaded the image file, you can import it onto your page (for example, in the code listed below, the file "Caray.gif" is an image of Haray Caray that I copied from the Chicago Tribune site...)

Hope that helps some; sorry I'm not too good at explaining this stuff. I basically learn as I go, which is the way to do it. Don't be afraid to screw things up (so long as you don't delete any file in the file manager)...any questions, let me know...Doug

In addition to whatever you add to the page (headings, tables, etc.), every page in HTML must have the following codes (in this order). The important thing is how every beginning code (html) always has a corresponding ending code with that back slash (/html):

Still more notes: Here's some notes I've sent to Greg, Bill and others who have tried working on their pages; hope it helps (you may just want to go to the library and check out a book on HTML; that's what I did and I learned it in about a day). I still don't know all that much (for example, I'm not too familar w/the terms you used ("FTP info: Server, Path"))...but try these notes and see how it works...

To start, go to the Geocities File manager page (http://www.geocities.com/members/tools/file_manager.html), which serves a starting point and also has some good HTML tutorial links if you want help on designing your page.

Once you're at the File Manager page, it will ask you for a member name (which is "nofehr") and a password (which is "league"). Don't use the quotemarks on either one.

Then you'll be in the file manager for our league site. There will be about 30 different files (or pages) listed; all of them are part of our site. To reach your team page, click on "bold.html", and click on "Edit" at the bottom of the page. Likewise, to reach our home page, you would click on "index.html" and then click on "Edit" at the bottom of the page.

Now that you're on your page, you can make any changes you want by using the codes you learned from the tutorial. Once you're satisfied w/your page, click on "Save", which will save your page and return you to the file manager. At that point you can exit the site...

To use your own files: For text, I've just been copying Word documents into the Geocities text editor (that's the text window you work in once you reach your page). For images, there is a place on the main file manager page (at the bottom) where you can upload images. You can always click on my page ("harrys.html") to see how I placed the Harry Caray image.

Basically, all you really have to remember is that every page in HTML must have the following codes (in this order). The important thing is how every beginning code (html) always has a corresponding ending code with a back slash (/html):
