Rotten Cold Interview

Stefan, how are you know.
Well, Im fine. I just woke up and Im drinking my coffee now.

Pls correct me if Im wrong that before RC started do you have a band called DEVASTATION. What is the difference between this two bands and reason why it was broke up?
Devastation was a kind of pre-rotten cold formed by our guitar player Dave, our ex-vocalist Christian and me in 1997/98. At this time we were really influenced by death metal bands like Malevolent Creation, Morbid Angel, Possessed and also some black metal bands (Mayhem, Marduk,...). With Devastation we played some local gigs and recorded one bad demo. Thats it. In January 2000 we parted ways with our drummer and Mango (RC drummer) joined the band. Thats the birth of rotten cold. The difference between these two bands is definitely the style of music. In Devastation all music was death metal orientated. Rotten cold is more brutal and intensive.

The first release of RC is your 3-song cdr demo Been fuckin. What are the people reaction and their comments about your first record?
We recorded our first demo been fuckin nailbombed in our rehearsal room in May 2000. I think we only need 2 or 3 days to record it. The quality isnt really good, but we catched a lot of points in different fanzines.

If you dont mind could you pls tell us your past and current line up of RC? Also Ive read that you have changed your vocalist last few months ago. Why?
Ok, the past line-up was: Christian vocals (2000-2004), Dave guitars, Mango-drums and me, Stefan on bass. This is also the original line-up of rotten cold. In August 2004 Christian had to left rotten cold, because there were some stupid differences between him and Dave. In Polsi, who is currently also singing in Decomposed Cranium, we found a talented vocalist.

Beside with RC is there any other thing that makes you all busy.
Yes, of course. Im studying psychology. The other members also have full time jobs. Our drummer is a locker. Dave (guit.) is also studying and our singer is doing his civil service right now. We are all busy.

Your latest release was your split cd with Human Mastication. What can you say about this split project. If there is a chance do you wish to make a project again with them?
The split project with Human Mastication is our best and most brutal record so far. I was and still really satisfied with this record. As we are planning our first full-length record, I dont think that we will work with HM again. But dont say ever. Gee and his guys are really okay and a cool band.

Do you have any upcoming releases you would like to share to us?
Yes, as Ive said below, we are working on our first full-length record. We have written 12-13 songs right now and well record them with a couple of other songs during 2006. The style isnt as brutal as on the split with Human Mastication. Its a little bit more experimental.

For the benefit of other people who are not familiar with RC. Tell us something more about the band like the style of music.
Rotten cold is a grindcore band from Austria, which also find inspirations in Hardcore punk, crustcore, death metal... Honestly we dont want to limit us to just one music style.

Is RC are a political grindcore band or a gore pathological type of band.
Rotten cold is definitely not a goregrind band. On our older releases we had a lot of political lyrics (against US-imperialism, anti-war lyrics etc.). On our new record we will continue with this anti-war tradition and we will also use some kind of philosophical lyrics.

And what is the important for the band? Lyrics or the music and why?
The music is more important, but you shouldnt neglect the role of our lyrics.

Your first setup was into death metal style and changed to grindcore type. Do you have any plan to go back of being a death metal band and what is the reason why the band changed the music?
We changed the style of our music, because it was a little bit boring to play over and over again the same style of music. The change from death metal to grindcore was a natural progress.

How's the grindcore scene right now at Austria. Tell us something more about the grindcore scene over there and some bands you could recommend to us.
There are not many grind bands here in Austria. Some recommendable bands are: Mastic Scum, Decomposed Cranium, Noisebazooka, Abyss of doom....

What about noise experimental ambient band. Do you listen to this type of band or do you know any type of band like this existing in Austria. Ah I remember the band ECITON. Are you familiar with this band?
Im not really familiar with noise bands, but my cousin is playing in a real noise trio called MAT. Ive never heard about the band ECITON. Are they really from Austria?

Of course all of us have our own fave bands. Share us some bands influenced RC.
Some great bands, which influence us, are: Nasum, Neurosis, Godflesh, Entombed, Killing Joke, Brutal Truth, etc...

Besides of touring Austria do you have any plan to tour outside Europe like in Asia or maybe in the Philippines?
We would love to come to Asia. Maybe we will visit your country in the following years. The only problem is the money, because the flight tickets arent cheap. If someone would like to invite us to a tour, dont hesitate to contact us.

What do you know about Philippines?
Honestly, I dont have a lot of informations of your country. I know that there are really cruel cock fights and that theres a radical islamistic underground organization. And a rich culture. As Im traveling really a lot, I would like to come to the Philippines and experience the country on my own.

What can you say about those ripped off people existing right now? Is it RC are being ripped off already. Do you agree that all people in south East Asia are all rip off? What can you about this kind of stupid comments from other people?
Yes, some people from White Russia ripped us off some years ago. I would never claim that all people in South East Asia are rip-offs. Thats far away from the truth.

What about in your country. Hows your life over there. Is it easy to form a band like that and released some records.
I dont think that its very easy to form a band, because it is very hard to find the right people. In Austria there are not many people interested in these music types, so it could be a problem to find a good line-up. The standard of living is very high in Austria, because the country is very rich.

Well I guess thats for all now. Thanks for your time to answer this interview. Any last words you would like to say.
Thanks a lot for your support, Joselito! Well release our first full-length during the next year (2007). So keep your eyes open. Greetings to all grinders/metal heads in South East Asia. Maybe well come and play a tour in the next years.
