Why have First Responders ?
In 1991 an American Doctor, Dr Richard Cummins looked at the pre-hospital care of patients suffering a Cardiac Arrest. He found that chances of survival were significantly improved if a series of events took place.  These events are:

Early Access to the Emergency Services.

Early Basic Life Support.

Early Defibrillation.

This sequence has become known as The Chain Of Survival and is the basis for providing the best possible pre-hospital care.
The key role of the First Responder is to provide early Basic Life Support (BLS) and Defibrillation. Research has shown that if a Cardiac Arrest victim is defibrillated immediately, their chance of survival is 80-90%. This rate drops by 10% every minute without treatment. By 10 mins post-arrest, the survival rate without BLS and defibrillation is
nil.
