UST Tigers 86: NU Bulldogs
71 July 11, 2004 by Mike Abasolo |
NU started out with Guards Jason Malcontento and Alex Miclat, Forwards Marlon Mollena and Christopher Catamora and Center Rey Mendoza. NU started out the 1st half with excellent perimeter shooting and penetrations that had them on the driver seat at 14-9 with 4 minutes to go in the 1st quarter. Both teams were creating a series of turnovers until NU took advantage and gave them a 9 pt. spread at the end of the 1st quarter. NU came out strong in the 2nd Quarter and led by as much 14 pts. with 8:30 minutes. NU hustled on defense, clogging up the passing lanes trying to outplay the Bulldogs with individual plays rather than play as a team. With quick ball movement and executing their offense as planned, the Bulldogs cruised to a 31-13 lead with 7 minutes to go before the close of the 1st half. UST decided to play zone, forcing some turnovers to cut down NUs lead to just 3 at the end of the 1st half of regulation. The 2nd half was a totally different story for NU. UST immediately took the driver's seat 39-38 by using different looks on their zone defense which then produced poor shot selections for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs were continuously hounded by USTs constant adjustment on their defensive scheme and closed out the 3rd quarter with an 11 pt. lead. In the 4th quarter, the Bulldogs had similar problems on offense and had a 10 pt. deficit on their faces with 3:30 left and in just 60 seconds, it ballooned to a 19 pt. deficit, 73-54.
Despite numerous demands by the coaching
staff for ball control and ball movement, the Bulldogs still went on the
same habits, created itself a deep hole and never recovered since.
