David Eckstein wins MVP as the St. Louis Cardinals take the 2006 World Series! THE CALL 'There's a long drive way back in center field . . . way back, back! It is . . . oh, what a catch by Mays! The runner on second, Doby, is able to go to third. Willie Mays . . . just brought this crowd to its feet . . . with a catch . . . which must have been an optical illusion to a lot of people. Boy!' -- Jack Brickhouse, NBC-TV... The Indians, who set an AL record with 111 wins in the regular season, never recovered from the stunning Game 1 loss. The Giants rallied to win Game 2, 3-1, and wrapped up the Series in Cleveland with a 6-2 win in Game 3 and a 7-4 win in Game 4...After the World Series, it was announced that Mays was the NL MVP. That season he hit .345 with 41 homers and 110 RBIs. Mays played until 1973, finished his career with a .302 average, 660 homers, 1,903 RBIs and 338 stolen bases. Mays won 11 Gold Gloves and set records for career putouts and total chances. While most people believe his catch in the 1954 World Series was his best defensive play ever, Mays disagrees. He says the one that robbed Ted Williams of a home run in the 1955 All-Star Game at Milwaukee County Stadium was his greatest defensive gem. CLEMENTE, MAYS, AARON! 1989, THE BAY AREA WAS THE SPORTS CAPITAL OF THE WORLD. GIANTS-A'S IN THE WORLD SERIES. 49ERS WOULD WIN THEIR 3RD SUPER BOWL AT THE END OF THE '89 SEASON, AND THEIR 4TH THE FOLLOWING SEASON! WRIGLEY FIELD, OLDEST NL PARK. LESS THAN A MILE AWAY FROM WHERE DA COMMISH LIVED IN BARR TOWER FROM '76-'79. THE MOMENT Many baseball fans consider the 1975 World Series the greatest in baseball history. The Red Sox were down three-games-to-two with the scored tied 6-6 in the bottom of the 12th when Carlton Fisk led off. Fisk launched the second pitch from Reds reliever Pat Darcy deep down the left field line. There was no doubt it was out, but would it stay fair? After Fisk hit it, he stepped cautiously toward first base, watched his drive, put his arms in the air and began trying to wave the ball into fair territory with body English. Fisk's homer clanged off the foul pole for a home run and a thrilling 7-6 Red Sox victory. For many, the most enduring image of this Series is Fisk pleading with his arms for his shot to stay fair...THE CALL 'Game tied, 6-6. Darcy pitching. Fisk takes high and inside, ball one. Freddie Lynn on deck. There have been numerous heroics tonight, both sides. The 0-1 delivery to Fisk. He swings. Long drive, left field! If it stays fair, it's gone! Home run! The Red Sox win! And the Series is tied, three games apiece!' -- Ned Martin

10/14/03, BARTMAN! At the time of the incident, Mark Prior was pitching a three-hit shutout for the Cubs. Luis Castillo was batting, with one out and Juan Pierre standing on second base. The Cubs were leading 3-0, led the series three games to two, and were five outs away from the World Series for the first time since 1945, and possibly winning it for the first time since 1908. Coincidentally enough, Game 6 was played on the 95th anniversary of the clinching game of the Cubs last championship.

The Giants led the series 3-2, and up 5-0 in Game 6 and six outs away from winning the Series, when the Angels scored three runs each in the seventh and eighth innings to win and force a game 7. The Giants never recovered and the Angels won 4-1 in Game 7 for their first championship. Dusty Baker and the Giants became the 18th team to squander a lead of three-games-to-two in a seven-game World Series.

The A's had won 103 games in the regular season and had breezed into their third straight Fall Classic by sweeping the Boston Red Sox in the American League Championship Series. The Reds had won only 91 regular-season games and had struggled to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates in the playoffs. No team with so few victories had ever swept a World Series. The only other time a team had swept an opponent that had at least 12 more wins during the regular season was in 1954, when the New York Giants took four straight from the Cleveland Indians... 'Cincinnati, the champions of baseball...for 1990!!! With an improbable sweep over Oakland!' - CBS Sports announcer Jack Buck on the call.

WHERE WERE YOU ON 10/17/89? I'll tell you what, we're having an earth-- - ABC Sports play-by-play commentator Al Michaels, whose sentence was cut off to the television audience due to the loss of power during the earthquake... This was the first World Series sweep since 1976...Out of respect for the earthquake victims, the Athletics weren't allowed to celebrate their World Series victory with champagne...Al Michaels, who spent three years in San Francisco as an announcer for the Giants, was nominated for an Emmy Award for news broadcasting after giving an eye witness account of the aftermath of the earthquake at Candlestick Park.

Mr. 40-40 led the A's to an MLB best 104 wins... José Canseco's grand slam in Game 1 was his only hit of the series. His fellow Bash Brother Mark McGwire had only one hit as well, the game-winning shot that ended Game 3. 'Gibson . . . swings! And a fly ball to deep right field! This is gonna be a home run! Unbelievable! A home run for Gibson! And the Dodgers have won the game, 5-4! I don't believe what I just saw! . . . I don't believe what I just saw!' -- Jack Buck, CBS Radio.

The Giants won the National League pennant in 1962. That year, Mays played in 162 games, batted .304, and led the team in eight major offensive categories. The team actually finished the 162-game regular season in a tie for first place with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Giants went on to win a three-game playoff series versus the Dodgers and advanced to play in the World Series. Unfortunately, the Giants lost to the Yankees in seven games. Mays hit just .250 with only two extra-base hits. It was his last World Series appearance as a member of the Giants...On July 6, 1963, Mays played in a game when future Hall of Fame members Warren Spahn and Juan Marichal each threw 15 scoreless innings. In the bottom of the 16th inning, Mays hit a home run off of Spahn and the Giants won the game 1-0.

Ligers win the 3rd championship in NYOFACE Baseball! Pujols wins 2006 NYOFACE MOB! PATRICK LEADS THE YAY AREA LIGERS TO THE 2006 CHAMPIONSHIP
Oct. 2, 2006: Hey all, Introducing your 2006 NYOFACE Baseball Champs, the Yay Areeeeeeeeeeeeeeeea Ligers! It was a hard fought championship, having to go through the hottest team (the Mactan Warriors) and the team with the best record during the regular season (da Dragons). As I left work Friday I was only up by 9 points! Good job this season Vince. Great season all of you, this year provided a lot of memorable moments. Congrats go to all the playoff teams for their season long dedication to make it this far. To all the rest of you guys, better luck next year!... (Continued below. See CHARLIE HUSTLE DIVISION).
SHOELESS JOE DIVISION MOP
VINCE LEADS THE CAVITE ENTENG DA DRAGONS TO DIVISION TITLE ONLY TO LOSE IN CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
congrats to the samurais... ahem... i mean the ligers for a well deserved championship. i believe this was the ligers most deserved win in the nyoface baseball/football series. the dragons will return again as a perennial power... kinda boring, but this is how the house was intended to be built... with a nucleus of young studs, and a few well placed veteran stars and a loaded minor league system... just like in football... i take little consolation in having the best record the past two years in baseball and last year in football... but the dragons time is only inevitable.. . the odds are surely in my favor... now's the time to concentrate on football and a current 3-5 record... with the second most pts against so far... it is only a matter of time that my two deep lineup will make it's way back to the top!!!... and the pretenas drop back to the bottom!!! the dragon has spoken
Ligers' Johan Santana holds up the 2006 MOP Award! The Yay Area Ligers' SP Johan Santana beat out teammate SP Brandon Webb for the 2006 NYOFACE Most Outstanding Pitcher (MOP) 1933 to 1787. The team with the next best 1-2 punch was the Mactan Warriors with #3 Chris Carpenter and #6 Bronson Arroyo.

(Continued...) And now for some final thoughts, written in the spirit of Manila Tarsiers GM Allan Rivera: "After a long season and having to deal with some key injuries to the likes of Albert Pujols and Francisco Liriano, the Ligers persevered and won Top Gun honors, then beat the no. 2 and no. 3 teams in the Power Rankings to win the 2006 NYOFACE Baseball title. With some opportunistic trades this year and a solid foundation in place, the Ligers are poised to once again take the league by storm over the coming seasons loaded with vets and prospects. The Liger franchise is now going to be a force to be reckoned with, the rest of the league better keep up! The Ligers are enjoying the increased competition, but realize that we'll be contenders year in, year out! Take note, the Ligers will make any moves necessary in order to improve the team, whether it be trading top prospects such as Delmon Young or paying top dollar for superstars like Johan Santana. Good luck trying to take the Ligers' crown!"

Seriously though, I'd like to thank everyone again, especially Edgar and the Tarsiers for helping make this league as fun as it is. Back-to-back NYOFACE football and baseball titles!!!! WOOOO - Ligers Management
PUJOLS WINS 2006 MOB! Although he missed a number of games in 2006, Yay Area Ligers' 1B Albert Pujols edged out the Mactan Warriors' Ryan Howard 1897.5 to 1836.2 for NYOFACE BASEBALL 2006 MOB (Most Outstanding Batter).
