Strifflechase

Old heads and youth blended to win this year's 'Strifflechase' at Anderson Park. The successful combination was Vic Lardelli, Stu McKie, Laura Smidt and Stefan Smith.
In idealic autumn conditions, a sizeable group of former members watched, with fond memories, the field of forty runners. Seven competitors were having their first start with the Napier Harriers. The group were split into ten teams for the four lap journey.
Aleesha Heywood (8.56) produced the fastest first circuit, just three seconds ahead of Jeremy McLeod, while another debutant James Harris was just 16 seconds adrift.
On the second lap Katie Harris (9.03) moved her team up one place to lead, while Stu McKie (8.43) produced the quickest and most decisive lap, to improve his team by four places. Another strong effort by Daniel Smith (9.01) had his team lying in a hardy third place.
All three leading teams held their positions during the third circuit. Cameron Poole-Smith(8.18) gained a forty metre advantage on a resourceful Laura Smidt (8.24),while Andre Smith (8.12) softened the gap on the leading pair. A splendid lap from Rory Diver( 6.57) promoted his team from ninth into a challenging fifth place.
On the last lap barefooted Stefan Smith (6.38) quickly gobbled up the leader Brent Jones. Smith was never threatened and crossed the finish with a 21 second advantage. Meanwhile Jones couldn't withstand the punishing final sprint of Daniel Wallis (6.28), who had taken over from Rory Diver.
As for Craig Mathers, his unfortunate 'Strifflechase' record continues.
