Pochuck Quagmire walk
Finding the Quagmire
There was a neat article in the New York Times towards the end of September 2002 about a newly opened stretch of the Appalachian Trail.

I was looking for some interesting 'untested' scenery to examine with my camera.

There was one small problem. While the article mentioned that the
Pochuck Quagmire was in Northern New Jersey and a part of the Trail, it neglected to provide an entry point where a car could be parked.

I started by working the web. I discovered the
Appalachian Trail pages, but also discovered that they want you to buy their maps and guide books.

I decided to find the place on my own. The weather report was cloudy. It was not only cloudy, but rainy. Wandering around in the general neighborhood, I found an entry point, a road crossing, but no parking.

Following some information I found on a map posted on a board that showed parking lots, I continued to reconnoiter. I found a parking lot, but nothing pointing towards the boardwalk.

This was getting pretty discouraging and my companion had clearly had enough of wandering around unknown roads in the rain.
Found the parking lot.
Watch the puddle!
Watch out for trains!
