About Me:
Thirty-something Cubs fan and vintage card collector living in the Piedmont-Triad area of North Carolina. Ever since shortly after I discovered baseball cards as a kid back in the 1980's, it seems I have always been far more interested in the classic cards that were produced years before I was born than anything I could buy that had just come out. In some respects I was born 30 years too late! Below is a list of my current collecting goals.
My Baseball Card Wantlist (updated October 24, 2007)
Preface:
I can admit now that I've never really been what you would consider a good set collector. In my early OBC days I tried, but could never really stick with anything for a long period of time due to interests that just jumped everywhere.
So with that said, below is a list of things I KNOW I am interested in collecting long-term. It's not really conventional, but then again neither am I. Let me know if you have questions..:-)
The Chicago Cubs Collection:
My current priority long-range collecting goal is to amass every Bowman and pre-1980 Topps card featuring a Chicago Cubs player. I can see this as a project that will, um possibly take some time. In the meantime, Im slowly working on it by collecting ANY pre-1980s Cubs cards. A specific wantlist will come later when it becomes appropriate, but right now Im looking for anything. Any player, any set, any condition. Feel free to begin with 1954 Topps #94! (just kidding) Dupes welcome.
"The Book" Collection:
The Book of course refers to The Great American Baseball Card Flipping, Trading, & Bubble Gum Book, copyright 1973 by Brendan Boyd and Fred Harris. Im working on a collection of the cards that are featured in the Profiles section of this book. Most are easy hits: 50s and 60s common cards with a memorable story spotlighting such vaunted notables of baseball history as Whammy Douglas, Carlton Willey, and Foster Castleman. There are some token toughies thrown in however, including a 55 Topps Koufax rookie and some 52 Topps high numbers for good measure. Currently accepting anything, I don't have enough yet to whittle out a decent wantlist.
The Little Bowmans Collection:
I am currently collecting any of the little Bowman cards from 1948 1952. These cards are miniature works of art, and in my opinion are sorely underappreciated in comparison to their Topps counterparts from the 1950s on. Again, not enough yet to post a decent wantlist. Anything welcome!
The Brooklyn Dodgers:
I am interested in ANY card featuring a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers (1957 and older). There is just something uniquely nostalgic about that neighborhood team. Whatever it was, the Dodgers lost most of that mystique about half an inning into the 1958 season. If I had been born 30 or 40 years earlier, I may have wound up a Dodgers fan. As it turned out, I became a fan of an all-together different type of underdog team (see the Cubs section above)!
The Star Single 25:
Most of these are cards that I owned once upon a time, but have foolishly let slip away over the years. The list is in no particular order in terms of priority, and any condition is certainly welcome. Id be glad to attempt to work out a trade for any of these classics:
1. 1933 Goudey #64 Burleigh Grimes
2. 1948 Bowman #22 Bill Bevens
3. 1952 Topps #31 Gus Zernial

Non-card related plug that I couldnt fit in anywhere else:
I also collect vintage MAD magazines (What, Me Worry?!) from 1952 - 1980 If you do too, please let me know!
Grading?
I love cards in nice condition, but happily accept VG or worse as the norm for vintage cards. On the lighter side of things, for a look at how grading is usually addressed in OBC circles, check out the notorious "Guru Grading" guide by Larry Tipton:
