The Terror (1963)
Rating: 4 Severed Heads
Synopsis:
Boris Karloff and Jack Nicholson in a film directed bt Francis Ford Coppola & Roger Corman(!)... seeing that there was no second thought in my mind to convince me otherwise that I had to buy this movie!
Nicholson plays an officer in Napoleon's army who comes upon a strange woman and ends up finding a crazy old witch, a mute, a reclusive Baron (Karloff), and a psychopathic bird.
Nicholson's acting is 100% pure Jack. Karloff is pure Karloff (which can tend to be hammy and remind me of The Grinch but, hey, who cares!). The story itself can be a little confusing at times (which is right on par for a movie filmed in 4 days!), but all in all, this is one supernatural mystery that should go from the bargin bin to your living room. But please! Don't spoil the ending of this one! Sites like IMDB and such will spoil the outcome so I recommend not looking this movie up on one.
What Has This Movie Taught Us?
-A compass won't work around the supernatural
-When you're blinded, walking aimlessly by cliffs is a bad idea
-Ghosts are hypnotized by rotating multi-colored lanterns and a magnifying glass
Memorable Moments:
01min- What a great way to get this movie rollin'
06min- These are classic Jack Nicholson lines
11min- What Gustaf? She's Batman?!
27min- Graveyards are just magnets for lightening aren't they?
51min- Where's Tippi Hedren when you need her?
71min- That was unexpected
78min- Campbell's Tomato Soup, it's Mm Mm Disturbing
Don't Quote Us On That:
Old Woman: "There is no girl"

Lt. Andre Duvalier: "Surely I made enough noise to wake the dead."

The Baron: "Twenty years ago I was not the man you're looking at now. This land, this estate,                             prospered. My people lived well and were happy."
