TECHNOLOGY/PRODUCT:

Machines and operation systems for peat jungle clearing

DESCRIPTION

General description

  • The main machines used are chainsaws, axes and hydraulic excavators. A heavy duty tree shredding machine is used depending on the operation system adopted. Operation systems are available for three methods of jungle clearing, namely (1) felling with burning, (2) felling with stacking and (3) felling with shredding.

a) Hydraulic Excavator

  • 60 kW diesel engine
  • High ground clearance of 559 cm with undercover
  • Operating weight of 13,000 kg
  • Bucket capacity of 0.15-05 m3
  • Ground contact pressure of 0.22 kgf/cm2 with 950 cm apex shoe
  • Ground contact pressure of less than 0.06 kgf/cm2 with 3.5-4.0 m wide timber mats

PERFORMANCE

  • The stacking space for the felling with burning method, felling with stacking method and felling with shredding method are 5-10%, 30-35% and 10-20% of the cleared area respectively.
  • The estimated cost for the felling with burning method, felling with stacking method and felling with shredding method are RM1600, RM3800 and RM7300 per ha respectively.

STATUS

  • The Felling with Burning Method has been used in Sarawak. For environmental cosideration, the third method should be applied.
