Number, operation, and quantitative reasoning. The student uses fractions in problem-solving situations. The student is expected to:

+ generate equivalent fractions

Patterns, relationships, and algebraic thinking. The student makes generalizations based on observed patterns and relationships. The student is expected to:

+ use lists, tables, charts, and diagrams to find patterns and make generalizations such as a procedure for determining equivalent fractions

f o c u s [up]

+ Explain the concept of fractions and how to obtain equivalent fractions.

+ Use a visual such as a pie. This pie visual can also lead into the idea of pie charts. Explain the significance of pie charts

. Activity 1 .

Students will make flash cards, which will help them study and learn equivalent fractions. On one side of the flash card should be a reduced fraction, and on the other side should be an equivalent fraction. Practice with the non-reduced fraction to see if the student can think of the equivalent fraction.

. Activity 2 .

Complete the Pie Charts and Fractions worksheet using Microsoft Excel.

. Activity 3 .

Students will collect data from friends, family, or classmates, of their favorites. Favorite can include types of music, types of food, types of animals, etc. Then, using the Chart Wizard in Microsoft Excel, students will create a data table which clearly shows how many people preferred each item, and will then graph the data.

** Students will either email their activities to their teachers or print out and turn them in. **
