Oldtown, Maryland -- King Opessa's Town
The oldest town in Allegany County, Maryland, Oldtown, was once the village of Shawnee King Opessa.
In 1739, Thomas Cresap came to this village on the Potomac River in the wilderness of far Western Maryland, and later set up a Fort, called Skipton, after his home in England. Here he formed the Ohio Company, and set the trail to the new Frontier.
From the French and Indian War, through the Civil War (the battle of Alum Hill, where the Confederates pushed the Union back), and the coming of the C&O Canal; the B&O Railroad, Oldtown has seen many changes.
Come with me as we scan the decades through pictures and stories. Relax from your busy schedules and be at peace with yourself in this tiny, quaint village in the Mountains.
