Ophelias Character Analysis
www.discoverkate.com
Ophelia is the daughter of Polonius, who is a chief advisor to the King, Claudius, and she has a brother named Laertes. She doesnt have a mother (which isnt talked about) and is loyal to her family. Its mostly agreed that she is somewhere between 16-19 years old. Hamlet and her are believed to be in love, but he starts to believe that shes against him and looks as if shes his mother, who he is extremely mad at. Many draw likeness between Gertrude and Ophelia both being followers, easily led by men they love, both loyal to their families, both sensual and confused and bothered by what is going on. But Ophelia is more innocent and naive and not part of the whole mess because her father does things without her knowledge. Gertrude is part of the downfall of her son. Ophelias emotions and personality are like a teenage girls emotional, thoughtful and sensitive. She goes mad because she is told not to see or talk to the one she loves, being loyal to her fathers requests. Hamlet comes to see her and could see that something was wrong and rants off. Then Ophelia is asks to lie to Hamlet by saying her father is at home while he is really there spying on them. She hears that Hamlet is crazy for her and she might be able to make him sane. She is very confused and heartbroken; she is not sure what is going on. It hits her hard when Hamlet accidentally kills her father. Ophelia is found drowned in the river and is buried with a Christian burial, even though it is expected suicide.(http://boingyboingy.com/jump/ophelia_intro.html)
Without Ophelia in Hamlet it would be empty because Hamlet wouldnt have gone crazy from Ophelias love. Ophelia is one of the main characters in the book and is a strong character because she goes crazy and actually drowns in Act 4, Scene 7. One woe doth tread upon anothers heel, so fast they follow. Your sister has drowned, Laertes. The Queen shows great distress. They bury her with a Christian burial basically because the King wants to be on good terms of Laertes, so he will kill Hamlet in a duel. Because she could have committed suicide there was a little thought of no burial. In Act 5, Scene1, Hamlet expresses his love for Ophelia, I loved Ophelia. Forty thousand brothers could not with all their quantity of love Make up my sum. Hamlet is distressed without Ophelia.
