Biography

Caf Sol are an English Ceilidh Band, formed in the early 1990s by various members of the legendary Old Swan Pub sessions, which spawned a whole movement of English Dance Bands including The Old Swan Band; Blowzabella; E II; and more recently The English Country Dance Band.

The original line-up included Lawrence Wright, Rod Gay, and the Old Swan's Ken Langsbury. The current line-up includes Mike Christie, Pete Hayes, Ophiuchus veteran Jon Cousins, Flowers and Frolics drummer Ted Stevens, and occasionally the Steve Ashley Band's drummer Alleyn Menzies.

Alleyn Menzies' involvement reflects the band's close association with Steve Ashley, whose "The Rough with the Smooth" appears on the Cafes first album: "From Here To The Bottle Bank" (INS-RE-003), and with whom Lawrence Wright has recorded on "Down By The Old Embankment" from the 1991 Various Artists compilation "All Through the Year" (Hokey Pokey HPR 2002.2), and more recently on the "Everyday Lives" album.
