Dismissed from Service in connection with the Mechelen Affair, caused by the forced landing of a German airplane in Belgium that had strayed off course due to bad weather. The two Luftwaffe Majors on Board had secret documents on the forthcoming offensive in the west. They managed to destroy most of the papers, the remaining papers fell into the hands of the Belgian Authorities however and from these they learnt of the intentions of the German attack on Belgium and the Netherlands (12 Jan 1940)
