New Swingset is Installed

The new swingset has been built and installed this week. It has been such a success that the orphans are allowed on them only a few hours a day. For the first few days they were on them from 6 am to 9pm. The grass is gone from beneath the swingset. Therefore, Pascual, our Dominican staff person who oversees the orphans during the day has put locks on the swingsets untill the children finish with their homework, school, and chores. He is not actually very happy about the swingset but the children could not be happier.

We thank Sandy Eun's mother and father for this generous donation. It has made Papa Negro, the founder of the orphanage very happy. He sits on his balcony much of the day and looks down on this dream of his. The swingset is set near the road so people can see the children playing. We think this is a good idea and lets people know that good things are happening here.

The orphans are asking us if they can have another one. With only four swings there is competition among the boys for a chance to swing..

Field report from Good Samaritan Orphanage, Dominican Republic
Dartmouth Scholar Finishes her Stay

Sandy Eun ended her intership at Good Samaritan Orphanage with a wonderful celebration. A banquet was held in her honor and 55 people attended. The Dartmouth undergraduate was hailed by not only the orphans as one of the best volunteers but also by local teachers and leaders.

The local school principle and his 5th grade teacher and wife came to thank Sandy for her month long service in the public school classroom where she taught English. Even though she started out with very little Spanish, she quickly learned from her students.

She was also thanked by Papa Negro for her quiet but strong leadership among the orphans. She taught a learning lab for several of the orphans everyday both in the morning and afternoon. Papa Negro blessed Sandy with an especially touching prayer and asked that God look over her and her family as she returns to the United States.
