I spent many summers camping at Onteora Scout Reservation in the late 60's and early 70's.  My troop (222 in West Hempstead) went to Onteora for summer camp every year while I was a scout but one.  In 1970,  we went to Wauwepex, but I still got to go to Onteora for two weeks at JLTC. I also returned to OSR for a few days each year as a leader in the mid and late 70's.   Since then I have been to many other scout camps, but none can compare to Onteora.  I was saddened several years ago when I heard  that the camp had closed down and was going to be sold. Thank goodness that the sale never happened and the council has seen fit to resurrect OSR.

I stumbled across Bill Cotter's Onteora website about two year's ago, and it brought back a lot of fond memories.  Inspired by my frequent visits to Bill's website and Gregg Sablic's pictures from the last three years, I decided return to Onteora for the first time in more than 25 years.  I drove up from my home on Sunday August 12, 2001.  This was move in day for the second period.  I was able to walk the entire camp and talk to a number of scouters, scouts and staff.  The camp has changed a lot, but life is coming back and the property is still one of the best.

I am the former Cubmaster of Pack 166 in Randolph NJ.  Now that my son has graduated to  Boy Scout Troop 166, I hope to take his troop to Onteora for a week summer camp.  In the meantime I took a lot of pictures of the camp as it exists today.  Some of them are posted on the other pages on this web site.  Please enjoy them and feel free to use them to promote OSR.

Thanks
Jim Sergison
