Game Summary A promising start turned out with a bad result as the Red Sox were able to come from behind to beat the Cubs 10-9 on a sunny day at Shedd Park. Chuck Trafton started out the season on a great note by retiring the side in order in the top of the first. Then he followed with a triple to highlight a four-run first inning. Trafton followed with three more good innings before he finished for the day as a tune-up for the National League opener next Sunday. He finished with six strikeouts against two walks, two hits and an earned run. The Cubs exploded for five more runs in their half of the fourth as Thomas and Trafton tripled and LeFebrve smashed the Cubs first homerun of the season. The homerun finished Red Sox starter Ray Cloutier and in came Brian Cole. Cole (1-0) was the story of the rest of the game as he held the Cubs to one hit over 5.2 innings and no runs. The Red Sox scratched for four runs in the fifth inning on some shaky defense. From then on, the game was well played. The Cubs infield turned a snazzy double play as Jack Sayers made a nice pivot for a twin killing to end the sixth inning. The Red Sox scored five runs in the top of the eight to take the lead. The Cubs couldn't stop the runs in time to save the lead. A valiant effort in the ninth fell short as Cole closed the game with runners on first and second to get his first OTB decision and make a loser of Duffy Thomas (0-1) on the mound and in his managerial debut. Next week brings the Pirates at Hazel Field in Tewksbury. Trafton will be starting and gunning for first win of the new season.
