Game Summary

Lowell - The Cubs got off the schnied today as they beat the Yankees 8-7 under clear blue skies at Gage Park to imrove to 1-2.  Tom Knox (1-0) pitched five innings for the win and Chuck Trafton picked up his first save.

Despite the score, the Cubs defense was the story of the game.  The Cubs played their best defense of the year as the committed only one error.  Sparkling plays were turned in by Chuck Trafton making a nice turn on a double play at second base and Jack Sayers catching a deep fly ball in left field to keep the Cubs up by one in the seventh.

Cubs first basemen Marvin Ritchie and Jason LeFebrve made nice stops at first to save potential infield errors.

On the offense, Randy Ochab had a sacrifice fly and a two-run single to lead the attack.  Ritchie broke out with two doubles and LeFebrve continued his hot streak with two more hits including a double.  Frank Cossette also contributed a pair of singles.

In a startling development, Duffy Thomas walked twice in his first win as manager.  With two walks this year, Thomas has surpassed his walk total from his first three years in the league.  When notified of the feat, Thomas said, "You mean I actually had one walk coming into this year?"

Gerry Kohl pitched three innings of one run ball in support of Knox.  Despite taking a line drive off of his thigh on his first batter faced, Kohl was able to throw three solid innings to get the game to Trafton.  Trafton's save is believed to be his first save in OTB play.

The Cubs play the Phillies next Sunday at Dracut High School.  Trafton (0-1) returns to the hill to start next week as the Cubs look to even their record.
