Game Summary Dracut - The Cubs evened their record at 3-3 by beating the Braves 5-3. Chuck Trafton (2-1) took the win with eight innings and 12 strikeouts. Duffy Thomas picked up his first save of the year with 1-2-3 ninth inning featuring two strikeouts. Thomas led of the home half of the first with a double, one of two on the day. Jack Muse drove Thomas in on an infield single and a throwing error. Marvin Ritchie knocked Muse in with a double and scored as Tom Knox reached on an infield error. Trafton cruised along as the Cubs added a single run in the third. Thomas's second double put him scoring position to be driven in by the second of Muse's three hits. Muse later balanced his perfect day at the plate by being doubled off second on a Ritchie fly to right. Muse claimed there were two out to no avail as both scorekeepers and umpires told him there was only one out. The Cubs defense shined Trafton recorded no fly ball outs. There were three line drives caught on the infield. Thomas was positioned perfect for one at shortstop and later made a high leap to snag a a sharp drive. Scott Van Winkle made the play of the day as with a runner on first and none out, he craftily dropped a liner hit right at him hoping to get a double play. The umpire saw through the ruse and promptly called the batter out on an intentional drop. When asked about the play, Van Winkle snickered, "Yeah, umm, I tried to drop it. I'd like to thank the umpire for recognizing there was no way I would not have caught that ball." Despite no hits, Randy Boucher broke out with two long flyouts that were caught only because the outfield was playing deep. The Cubs play next Sunday against the Orioles. Jerry Kohl makes his first start.
