Game Summary
Lowell - The Cubs returned to their 2001 formula
with four homeruns in a 9-3 win over the Dodgers at Ryan Field today.
Chuck Trafton started things off with a homerun to lead off the game. Duffy Thomas followed later with the first of his two homeruns to give the Cubs a quick 2-0 lead. The Dodgers managed three runs in the bottom of the first to reclaim the lead. That would be all they would get as Trafton (3-2) held them scoreless over the rest of the game for his third complete game. Trafton finished with 14 strikeouts for his fourth double digit strikeout game of the season. The Cubs strung a few hits together in the fourth inning to go ahead 5-3. Jack Muse doubled in Trafton and Thomas followed with an RBI single. Tom Knox capped the rally with an infield hit that saw Thomas score as the Dodgers threw the ball around. The Cubs added a single run in the fifth on a Terry Throwe RBI single to score Ricky Greenhalge. Two more Cubs runs scored in the seventh as Marvin Ritchie and Thomas hit homeruns on consecutive pitches. The scoring was complete in the ninth as Thomas drove in his fourth run of the day on an infield single. Greenhalge and Muse made nice plays in left field and at short stop respectively. Randy Ochab once again made several nice plays at third. The Cubs break for the Fourth of July with a 4-6 record. The All-Star game is July 4 at 1:00 at Alumni Stadium. Duffy Thomas and Jack Muse will be the Cubs representatives. Next league game is July 14 against the Indians at Campbell Field. |
