Game Summary

Lowell - The Cubs started the playoffs in thrilling fashion by winning 8-6 in 11 innings over the Phillies.

The two teams battled to 6-6 through nine innings.  After a scoreless 10th, Ricky Greenhalge walked to lead off the 11th and advanced on a Jack Muse groundout.  After a strikeout left Greenhalge at second, Duffy Thomas blasted a home run to deep center to provide the winning runs.

Thomas, in his sixth inning of relief, retired the Phillies in the bootom of the 11th to put the Cubs at 1-0 in the round-robin portion of the playoffs.

The game didn't start off too well for the Cubs.  Starter Chuck Trafton gave up three runs in the bottom of the first for Phillie lead of 3-0.

Ronnie Perrin of the Phillies held the Cubs hitless through four innings as the Phillies added a single run in the third.  A Phillie hitter sent a shot deep to left that scored one run.  Randy Boucher made a nice relay throw to Thomas and Thomas made a throw to the plate well in time to nab the hitter trying to score a home run.

The Cubs broke through for a run in the fifth as Muse and Marvin Ritchie connected on back-to-back doubles.

In the sixth inning, Tom Knox, Trafton and Randy Ochab connected for consecutive singles with Ochab's hit scoring Knox.  A Jerry Kohl single loaded the bases.  With two outs, Oscar Colvin delivered a key two run single to right field to even the score at 4-4.

Thomas relieved Trafton for the bottom of the sixth.  In the top of the seventh, Randy Boucher reached on an error and advanced to second as Greenhalge was hit by a pitch.  A passed ball advanced the runners and Ritchie delivered a key two run single to put the Cubs up 6-4.

In the bottom of the seventh, Thomas started a nice 1-6-3 double play as Greenhalge made the pivot to nab the runner at first.

The Phillies tied the score in the eight on a double and a pair of singles to set up the late inning dramatics.

The Cubs played a very good over-all game to position themselves well for the play off stretch.  The Cubs are 1-0 in pool B of the NL, with the pool winner advancing to play the pool A winner for the NL championship and the right to play the AL at LaLacheur Park.

The Cubs play the Braves next week at Greater Lowell Vocational School.  Trafton is scheduled to start again.
