Game Summary

Lowell - Opening Day 2003 looked to be in doubt due to weather, but the field was playable and it was great to be playing baseball again!

The Cubs lost a tough game to the White Sox 12-8.

Leather was flashed early as Tom Knox robbed the lead off hitter of a hit with a nice catch of sinking line drive.

The Cubs got out to an early lead as Frank Cossette drove in two runs with a clutch, 2-out single in the second inning.  Cossette hustled around to third on the play and made a nifty "slide" to claim the bag.

After the White Sox took a 4-2 lead in the 4th, the Cubs came storming back on a Marvin Ritchie double, RBI single by the newly re-acquired Steve Johanson, a Duffy Thomas RBI single and three more runs on a fielder's choice and Oscar Colvin ground ball that scored two runs on an error.

The 5-4 lead wouldn't last though, as the White Sox tied it with a run in the fifth of off starting pitcher Chuck Trafton and four more in the sixth off of losing pitcher Tom Knox (0-1).

Knox got out of danger in the seventh when Randy Ochab made a nice catch of a low line drive at third base and doubled off the runner at second.

The White Sox would extend their lead to 12-7 in the eighth scoring three runs off of Jerry Kohl.  Thomas relieved Kohl with two outs and made a nice diving stop of a ground ball up the middle.

Kohl scored the final run after leading off the eighth with a double and scoring on a groundout by Ochab.

Thomas got a inning ending double play in the ninth on a routine 1-3-2 double play.

The Cubs would like to extend a nice welcome to Mark Hamel as he joins the Cubs for his first OTB season.  Welcome Mark!

Cubs play the Giants next Sunday at Lowell Voc.
