Game Summary

Lowell - The Cubs dropped to 3-6 as the Cardinals hung on for an 11-9 win.

The day started off on a sour note as the Cardinals struck for 5 runs in the top of the first off of Chuck Trafton (2-3).  Trafton pitched three innings on the day and gave up the 5 runs, only 3 earned.

The Cubs scored a run in the first as Tom Knox singled in Marvin Ritchie who had singled and stole second.

The teams traded scoreless innings in the second and third.  In the second, Scott Van Winkle took a bad hop at third off of his head.  A late night check with the family said he was OK, but was sporting a nice black eye.

The Cardinals scored a single run in the fourth as Knox took over on the hill from Trafton.  After a lead-off single, Knox induced three straight groudouts to Duffy Thomas at shortstop, with the second scoring the run to put the Cards up 6-1

The Cubs scratched out two runs in the fifth as Jason LeFebrve bombed a triple to left scoring Randy Ochab who reached with his team-leading fourth hit by pitch.  Randy Boucher knocked in LeFebrve for the second run to make it 6-3.

Plenty of scoring in the sixth as the Cubs and Cardinals traded five run innings.  The Cardinals scored theirs on a couple of walks, two singles and a triple.

Down 11-3, the Cubs scored their five as DJ Shaughnessy, Terry Throwe and Ritchie had consecutive singles.  Trafton drove in two with his NL leading sixth double, Thomas drove in one with a sac fly and Tom Knox plated the final two runs of the inning with a homerun to centerfield.

After rallying back to within 11-8, Thomas held the Cardinals scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings.  The Cubs half of the eighth proved fateful.

After Throwe reached on an error and Ritchie singled, Thomas lofted a two-out single to right center that Throwe and Ritchie score.  However, a questionable call by the field umpire upheld an appeal that Ritchie missed second and the inning was over with the Cubs still trailing by three.

Thomas blanked the Cards in the ninth, ending the inning by snaring a line drive back through the box with runners on second and third.

Tom Knox then led off the Cubs ninth with a mammoth blast to right center to give him two homeruns on the day, three hits and four RBI.

After an infield out, Ochab singled and Frank Cossette drew the second of his two walks on the day putting runners on first and second and one out.

That brought up LeFebrve who had shown great plate discipline all day.  After several pitches, LeFebrve was jammed and sent a little pop towards shortstop.  The Cardinal shortstop made a great diving catch and doubled Ochab off second to end the game.

12 of the 13 Cubs that batted had hits on the day as the Cubs showed great resilience in battling back all day.  After Knox's three hits, Ritchie, Thomas and Shaughnessy added two apiece.

Next game is against the A's at the Voc.
