Game Summary Westford - The Cubs survive a close battle to win their first playoff game 5-4 over the long time nemesis Marlins. Chuck Trafton (1-0) retired the Marlins in order to lead off the game. The Cubs followed that by scoring three runs in the bottom. Trafton started things off with a single and a stolen base. Steve Johanson walked and Duffy Thomas was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Trafton scored on a wild pitch. With two outs, Randy Ochab drove in two runs with a bloop double to left. Trafton worked through the first three innings without yielding a run, but gave up a lead-off homerun to start the fourth. Trafton retired the side without any further damage. However, in the Marlins fifth, the Cubs gave up two runs to tie the game at three on a couple of singles and run down that netted a score. The first out of the inning was made on a sliding catch in right field by Marvin Ritchie. The score remained tied until the top of the eighth when the Marlins scored on a near double caught stealing. With runners on first and third and none out, the Marlins attempted a double steal. Jerry Kohl threw out the runner stealing second, the Frank Cossette's relay throw home after the tag just eluded kohl as the Marlins played jumped around Kohl. Down 4-3, Randy Ochab lead off the bottom of the eighth on a two-base error by the Marlins right fielder. Scott Van Winkle then tied the game with a double to the gap in right center. The was a play at second as Van Winkle slid in safely. The ball, Van Winkle and Scott Metro of the Marlins arrived at second together. As Van Winkle slid in, the ball hit Metro in the shin. It was eventually determined that Metro suffered a broken shin and was taken off in an ambulance. The Cubs players hope for the best and wish Scott a speedy recovery. When play resumed, Cossette walked to put runners on first and second and none out. Mark Hamel then lined out in to a double play as Cossette was erased from first on a nice play by the pitcher. DJ Shaughnessy then delivered the big hit as he worked the count and singled to left to drive in Van Winkle with what would be the winning run. Trafton retired the side in the ninth for the complete game victory to put the Cubs atop their bracket with the Dodgers. The Cubs face the Phillies next Sunday at Shedd Park. Last year in the playoffs, the Cubs beat the Phillies 6-4 in 11 innings at Shedd. The re-match should be a great game!
