Wednesday Evening, June 6th - TURTLE WATCH. Sea Turtles come on to the east coast of the US to lay their eggs. Many of them use the shoreline and beaches from Key West all the way up to Georgia, and many of those use the beaches along Palm Beach County. The Sea Turtles range in weight from 250 to 600 pounds, and up to 6 feet in length. Once a year, we buy tickets and go to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton. Starting at about 8:30 - 9:00 P.M., they give a presentation on sea turtles and send out their staff to patrol the nearby beach for a sea turtle. When they find one, the staff radios in and we all get into our cars and go to the location. We watch one of the most awesome and primeval sights in nature - using only her hind legs, a female turtle has dug a cylindrical hole about 3 feet in depth, 15" in diameter, and is dropping about 100 eggs into the hole. She will then cover it up and make her tortuous way back into the ocean. There's no guarantee that they will find a sea turtle that evening - but they usually do. Tuesday Evening, September 4, 7:00 P.M. - Turtle Hatchling release, Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. The Nature Center keeps track of where and when the sea turtle eggs and nests are, and watches for the tiny hatchlings to come up out of the sand. They gather up the hatchlings, and release them into the water to start their little lives. This is good for the hatchlings, because it removes them from the dangers of land and air predators, and keeps them from going the wrong way to get into the ocean. Perhaps it adds 50% to their chances to live and grow. Its good for us so that we can watch them as they make their way into the water and we can cheer them on. Cost is $10.00/Ticket. Kids of any age can attend (only kids >6 can attend the turtle watch). Leader is Jordan London.

Saturday Evening, September 8, 7:00 P.M. - OAK/Mensa/MeetUp Monthly Party. Come out and be with and meet some very nice people. Theres music, games, food (some of which you bring), conversation, and perhaps some tom-foolery. Well send a vehicle ahead carrying the complete barbecue foods and gear and accessories and the complete snorkel gear for everyone. The bicycle ride is about 3 miles to the beach, where the reef comes up right on to the beach. In low tide, you can actually walk to the end of the reef. After our lunch, everything gets packed back into the vehicle to get taken back to our starting point. We leave the beach by bicycle, and go to Gumbo Limbo Nature Center and the end back to the starting point. Cost of parking for the vehicle at the beach is covered in the Outing fee. They are both really great, and Wakodahatchee has a family of alligators in it. They also have a wide variety of common birds, and some not-so-common ones. Well schedule Wakodahatchee in the morning, and depending on how long we stay there can go to Green Cay before lunch or after lunch at a local restaurant. Nominal fee $3.00 OAK paid Members; $4.00. Non-paid Members. Leader Jordan London.

Sunday, September 30th - ECO TOUR Continued. The Wildlife Research Team (WRT), led by Donna Kazo, widow of the WRT founder Dr. Tom Kazo, spent a couple of years re-creating the channels and water flows in the marshes and lands below Matheson Hammock in Dade, which had been devastated by a series of hurricanes starting with Andrew. Now, where there was only dead water, decaying plants, no birds/animals/fish, there is a diversity of wildlife that has re-established the food chain and a wonderful canoe trail. We will tour this area by canoe, led by Donna, and see for ourselves what a huge change there is. Cost is $10.00 per person, $5.00 for kids under 15 not paddling. Later, other trips will include the Miami River and Coral Gables Waterway (originally created for the Hotel Biltmore and its gondolas). Leader Donna Kazo.

We have had many exciting and wonderful Outings so far this year. Would you like to help plan activities for the time period January-June 2008? If there is something special outdoors (or indoors) youd like to do, in cool or warm weather, this is the time and place to arrange it. We meet in Hollywood and the meeting generally takes 2 - 2 hours. We will plan and organize our Schedule for the next six months, through the end of June 2008 or later This is the time for brain-storming, bringing forth ideas for new and interesting activities and adventures. With this schedule, we can plan for a few strenuous or non-local Outings during the year - a fifty-mile bicycle ride, ten-mile kayaking, an out-of-area trip for a week. Whats most important is that YOU BE AT THE MEETING - we need all the people and thinking we can get. At Jordan and Rubys house in Hollywood. Refreshments - snacks, pizza, drinks are available. Come on down. Leader Ruby Allman.

PLEASE REMEMBER - PAYMENT BY CHECK IS REQUIRED AT THE TIME OF SIGNING UP OR MAKING RESERVATIONS.  ALL OUTINGS ARE PAYABLE IN ADVANCE. If you sign up at a regular meeting, your check pertaining to the Outing should be left in the folder or mailed to OAK.  One Check per Outing, please.  If you sign up by e-mail or phone, please follow the instructions of sending your check.

For Kayak Outings where there is a fee for rental you will generally get a $25.00 per person discount if you bring your own boat.  You also get a discount for most Canoe Outings if you bring your own boat.

***********************************************

People have asked why they should pay a nominal fee ($3.00, $4.00, $5.00) when they can do the same things at no cost with other groups.  Some reasons:

1.We do an annual anniversary party which is free to all comers, as well as an annual meeting/dinner which the Klub subsidizes at about 40%; and we support the Wildlife Sanctuary at Flamingo Gardens.

2. Paying a fee in advance helps ensure that you will show up.  Our experience, along with many other groups, has been that the no-show rate is too high, and investing a small amount of money helps people to show up or cancel in advance.

3.  Our monthly dues help support our activities of buying gear and equipment to lend to folks who don’t have bicycles, tents, mattresses, sleeping bags, backpacks.  This, of course, is for Klub Outings only.

4.  In addition, the Klub brings on camping trips lanterns, stoves, cooking gear, pots, pans, lantern stands, and other items that can be shared so that participants can travel extremely lightly.
