The Trouble with Normal

Bob (David Krumholtz) is a regular guy just trying to live an ordinary life. But for Bob and his friend, Max (Brad Raider), this is a particular challenge because of the unique perspective they have on the world - that it's out to get them.

Their friend, Claire (Paget Brewster), a pretty and down-to-earth therapist, is trying to convince them that they have nothing to fear, but this isn't easy in a world where there really ARE cameras in the traffic lights and bank machines, where your credit card company DOES know the last time you bought underwear, and your HMO knows all about that embarrassing itch. Bob's problems are exacerbated when he becomes convinced that his new next door neighbor, Zack (Jon Cryer), is spying on him. The catch is, Zack really is spying on Bob.

She might play a therapist on the new ABC sitcom, but Paget Brewster is one of the last people you're ever likely to catch in a shrink's chair. "Where I come from, therapy is for weirdos," the Massachusetts native says. "You also don't get in there and tinker and screw around because, you know, all kinds of garbage can come out of you and then you're really messed up."

Still, the star says getting the Trouble gig might be a sign that it's time to give psychiatry a shot. "I do feel compelled, but I just can't bring myself to do it," she admits. "I'm scared they're going to find out something is really wrong with me, and I feel like I'm a pretty well-functioning adult." The actress also fears that if she starts undergoing real-life counseling, she might find herself arguing with the show's writers over what a therapist would and would not say. "Then I'll be shutting down storylines," she admits, "and I don't want to do that."

At the very least, Brewster is considering attending a support group. "I would like [that]," she says. "But then that doesn't seem fair. What group therapy am I going to go to? [They'll just say], 'Oh, the actress is here tonight.'"'
