Webelos Outdoor Activities
The most important thing to remember when conducting outdoor activities is: DO NOT RUN A WATERED-DOWN BOY SCOUT PROGRAM! Webelos is a step between the rest of Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. The Webelos deserve a program specifically for them. The program of the Boy Scouts of America is a progressive program.

Here are 9 particular types of outdoor activities that you could do with the Webelos den

CAMPFIRE. With your den, you could simply have an evening campfire. You can practice cooking skills or just have fun. You can start a campfire log by saving ashes from every campfire you have, listing the boys who attend, etc. A copy of this follows.

CAMPING. There are many ways that you can get in a few overnight campouts with the boys. Camping is a big part of Boy Scouts, so show them what is ahead for them. If possible, camp at least once with local Boy Scouts to show the boys what the Boy Scouts can learn to do.

HIKES. Its easy to overlook this outdoor activity, but there are so many variations that are possible that it should never be boring. Do scavenger hunts, tree identification, touch, smell, and feel hikes, etc.

FISHING. There is no doubt that almost all boys love to fish. Find a safe area to go fishing and get lots of help from the parents.

SCAVENGER HUNTS. This is mentioned in hikes, but it shouldnt be overlooked as an activity on its own.

STAR GAZING. There are observatories in Madison to go to with the den. Or just get a good resource book and star gaze while camping or as an activity all alone.

BASIC OUTDOOR SKILLS. There are certain outdoor skills the boys will have to master while in Boy Scouts. You can begin working on knot tying, building and maintaining a fire, simple outdoor cooking, knife work, etc. These skills will help them along in their transition to Boy Scout skills. Ask Boy Scouts to join you and have them show the Webelos these skills.

OUTDOOR MEETINGS. During good weather, adapt your meeting to have it outdoors. They will learn at Boy Scout camp to concentrate on merit badges while being outside.

OUTDOOR FIELD TRIPS. Many outdoor field trips are easier to take once the boys reach this age. Participate in council outdoor activities, start showing the boys what careers are available to them that are outdoor oriented. Have fun!

Remember to utilize your local troop for ideas and help with your outdoor program. Look into special outdoor awards that the boys can earn. Make sure that the OUTING is in SCOUTING for your Webelos!
