Killer cobras

I am in my fourth year as a Cub Scout leader. With the help of our Pack Committee and parents we hope to provide an enjoyable experience for the boys this year. Please feel free to contact me anytime with questions or input.

How we are organized

When a Cub Scout is in the fourth and fifth grades (or has reached his 10th birthday), he becomes part of a Webelos den, and will need a Webelos book. There are dens for boys in grades 1 through 5. All the dens together make up the Pack. We are Pack 1680 in the Sam Houston Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

If your boy is new to the Pack, the first rank he has to work on is Bobcat. After earning the Bobcat rank, he now works on requirements for the Webelos badge, 20 activity badges, and the Arrow of Light Award (the highest award in Cub Scouting), which prepares him for Boy Scouting. For a complete list of the Webelos requirements, visit Pack 215's excellent page. Most Webelos finish their Arrow of Light requirements in the early spring of their fifth-grade year, and make the transition then to a Boy Scout troop.

At this grade level, camping becomes part of the Cub Scout program, with one catch. Each Webelos Scout who is sleeping overnight on a camp-out must be accompanied by an adult partner. (This way the adults get to share the fun, too!)

Uniforms

The Webelos uniform is also different than the other Cub Scout ranks. Webelos scout have the option to continue to wear the blue Cub Scout shirt, or the tan Boy Scout shirt, worn with blue shoulder loops. If you are new to our pack, or if your scout has outgrown his blue shirt, please purchase the tan Boy Scout shirt. He can continue to wear it when he joins Boy Scouts. Don't throw away your old blue shirt! These "experienced" uniforms can be used by Wolf and Bear Cub Scouts in our pack.

The neckerchief is blue, green, gold, and red plaid, with Webelos emblem. Webelos wear either an official Webelos neckerchief slide (gold colored metal with Webelos emblem), or a handmade slide. The cap is an Official Webelos baseball-style cap (navy blue with light blue front panel and Webelos emblem).

Our pack requires a uniform from the WAIST UP ONLY. Please check out our Uniform page for more information. Belts, pants, and socks are optional. You might consider purchasing a belt, since the belt loops the Webelos can earn fit on them. If your Webelos scout has a blue shirt, they should wear the Official Cub Scout navy blue web belt with metal Webelos buckle. If your Webelos scout has the tan shirt, either the official Boy Scout olive web belt with metal Boy Scout buckle or the blue belt with Webelos buckle may be worn. If you do not already have the blue belt, purchase the Boy Scout belt. Your scout can continue to wear in when he graduates to Boy Scouts.

Meeting Times and Places

Frequency of the Webelos patrol meetings depends on the Den Leader and cub scout families. Meetings usually take place at the Faith United Methodist Church. No snacks included. Dues will be determined by the Den Leader.

The Trail to Achievement

The boy's first trail of achievement will be to earn their Bobcat patch. He then starts working on his Webelos requirements. This involves YOU, the parent. We will work on these steps in den meetings... but... you should work on them at home as well. Unlike the other ranks in Cub Scouting, only the Den Leader can sign off requirements in the Webelos book. Please set some time aside each week to help your Webelos Scout work on his requirements. As your Webelos Scout completes a requirement, please send me a note and I can sign it off. Webelos should bring their handbook to each meeting.

I can tell you, that there is no greater satisfaction for the boys than receiving their awards and wearing them proudly. The handbook explains everything... and as always... you can give me a call.

A Final Word . . .

The main idea is to make the boys learn and have FUN. Call me anytime for questions or ideas on how we can make our den better.....
