Benton County is located in Western Tennessee. It is bordered on the north by Henry & Stewart Counties, on the east by Houston & Humphreys Counties, on the southeast by Perry County, on the south by Decatur & Henderson Counties and on the west Carroll County.  It was formed from Humphreys County in 1836.

This is a wonderful site and mentions a Judge J. C. Cook quoting from: The Goodspeed History of Tennessee Illustrated - Carroll, Henry and Benton Counties The Goodspeed Publishing Co., 1887 History of Benton County -   "During the first three or four years after the organization of the circuit court, it was presided over alternately by Judges J. C. Cook, William R. Harris, Benjamin C. Totten, Mortimer A. Martin and William C. Marberry - Rowe genealogy is listed at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnbenton/ancest13.html and there is a John Marbry who married fourth wife, Mahulda Cook, on 2 December 1855 in Benton County. They were married by A.W.C. Mathney, J.P., but he died before April of 1859 without having children by this marriage.
