Hardeman County is in West Tennessee, one of the states's three "grand divisions.
Formed in 1823 from Hardin County and Indian lands, it was named in honor of Thomas Jones Hardeman (1788-1854), Creek and War of 1812 Soldier. The first county seat was Hatchie Town about one mile north of the present county seat, Bolivar.
