Biographical Sketch:
JOSHUA FLOOD COOK was born Jan. 14, 1834 near Bagdad, in Shelby Co., KY.  He was the son of William and Lucy (Flood) Cook and the grandson of Rev. Abraham Cook, the pioneer Kentucky Baptist preacher.  William and Mary  were also the parents of :

Alexander
Mary
Abraham Cook.

He graduated from Georgetown College, Georgetown, KY in 1858. He was licensed to the ministry at Georgetown, KY in 1857 and was ordained in 1858 at Campbellsburg, KY.  Joshua was president of New Liberty College, New Liberty, KY 1859-61. At the beginning of the Civil War, he joined the Confederate cause and assumed a chaplaincy at Summitt, MS. Joshua was president of LaGrange College, LaGrange, MO (now Hannibal-LaGrange College, Hannibal, MO) 1866-1896. He received his LL.D degree from Baylor University, Waco, TX in 1868.

Joshua F. Cook was president of Webb City College, Webb City, MO, 1896-1900.  Joshua Flood Cook's achievements as the longest tenured president of LaGrange College for 30 years, and his accomplishments in that position are unique in the annals of educational history.  He is remembered as an outstanding person among the college presidents of his time.  Dr. Cook was the author of "Old Kentucky," 1908.
