About Nicholas County

Nicholas county (KY's 42nd) was formed in 1799 from Bourbon County and Mason County. It is located in the Bluegrass region of the state. The elevation in the county ranges from 565 to 1060 feet above sea level.  Nicholas County is named for Col. George NICHOLAS of Fayette Co. The first settlement was at Blue Licks ca 1784 by David TANNER. The first county court was held at the home of Martin BAKER Jr. in 1800. The county seat was established in Ellisville in 1805 on the James ELLIS farm and stayed county seat until 1816. 1. WILLIAM1 COOK was born Abt. 1764 in CHESTERFIELD , VIRGINIA, and died May 22, 1844 in NICHOLAS COUNTY, KY. He married (1) ANNE BAKER December 26, 1780 in CHARLOTTE COUNTY, VA., daughter of MARTIN BAKER and MARY KIMBROUGH. She was born Abt. 1763 in CHARLOTTE COUNTY, VA., and died 1804 in BOURBON NOW NICHOLAS. He married (2) SARAH BAKER GRIFFITH [KIMBROUGH] March 20, 1813 in NICHOLAS COUNTY, KY, daughter of MARTIN BAKER and MARY KIMBROUGH. She was born 1762 in CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA1, and died July 22, 1838 in NICHOLAS COUNTY, KY1.

Notes for WILLIAM COOK:

WILLIAM LIVED WITH HIS FATHER , UNCLE OR FATHER-IN-LAW AS THERE ARE NO RECORDS OF HIM EVER OWNING LAND IN VIRGINIA. BETWEEN THE YEARS 1783 AND 1787 HE MOVED TO NORTH CAROLINA. HE MOVED TO KENTUCKY IN 1801-02.

AFTER THE DEATH OF ANNE, HE MARRIED HER SISTER SARAH AND LIVED IN HER HOME.

OBITUARY OF WILLIAM COOK, SR.

CAPTAIN WILLIAM COOK, SENIOR, MAY 22, 1844 DIED AT HIS RESIDENCE NEAR MILLERSBURG. SOLDIER IN REVOLUTION, HE BORE WITH HIM TO HIS GRAVE SCARS OF WOUNDS RECEIVED ON THE FIELD OF BATTLE. Notes for SARAH BAKER GRIFFITH [KIMBROUGH]: SARAH PROVED TO BE MORE THAN AN ORDINARY WOMAN, AND WHOSE EARLY LIFE SEEMED TO BE A NECESSITY TO THE EARLY SETTLERS. AT THAT TIME DOCTORS WERE FEW AND LIVED A GREAT DISTANCE APART. AFTER COMING TO KENTUCKY, SARAH STUDIED MEDICINE AND SOON MASTERED THE KNOWLEDGE OF HERBS, AND BEFORE CIVILIZATION HAD CAST ITS MANTLE OVER THE COUNTRY, HER PRACTICE HAD EXTENDED FAR AND NEAR. SHE SPENT HER LIFE IN GREAT USEFULNESS. [ PERRIN'S HISTORY OF HARRISON, BOURBON, NICHOLAS, AND SCOTT COUNTIES. P.660 ]
