Tipton County was established 29 October, 1823 and organized December 1, 1823.  It was named after Captain Jacob Tipton, who was the son of of Colonel John Tipton. Capt. Tipton was killed while leading a charge of his troops against a force of Indians near Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1791. Prior to the establishment of the county, the land comprising it was a part of Shelby County. Some of the original land of the county was appropriated in 1835 to make up the territory that would comprise Lauderdale County.  Covington was selected as the county seat and was named for Leonard Wales Covington, a native of Maryland, who was killed in the battle of Chrysler's Field during the War of 1812.
