Matilda Ann Riddle was my great
great great grandmother. She married Moses Armes Jr. a veteran of
the Civil War. Moses was born about 1829 in Perry Co, Tennessee to
Moses and Elizabeth (Hammer) Armes. He died about 1899 in Franklin
Co, Illinois and is buried in the East Fork Cemetery, Franklin County,
Illinois. Matilda Riddle and Moses Armes married: 29
Dec 1864 in Franklin Co, IL. Together, they had several children:
Hettie ARMES, born: Jul 1868; Monroe ARMES, born: 1871;
William ARMES, born: Jul 1873; Cora M. ARMES, born: 1876; Sally ARMES,
born: May 1880; Mary ARMES, born: Oct 1885; Grace ARMES, born: May 1887;
and ALTA JANE ARMES, born:
5 Jan 1866.
So, who is Matilda's father?
The 1860 Franklin Co, Illinois census shows a Newton Riddle in
Fitts Hill, born in Tennessee, 38 years old. His wife is listed as
Margaret - 25 years old. Five children are listed, Matilda age 14,
Susan age 11, John age 9, Elijah age 4, and William age 1. The age
of wife Margaret seems rather young for the age of the children.
Recently we found an obit summary for Richard Nathanial Riddle.
Richard Nathanial Riddle 100 years 6 months
died at home of his son in Creal Springs. Buried at East Fork Cemetery.
Born July 9, 1814 in Giles County, Tennessee. Came to Illinois at
age 23 (1837) and settled in Gallatin Co. At age 24 he moved to Franklin
County, Illinois. He married in 1843 at age 29 to Morganna Dew.
Morgana lived until the age of 84. They had nine children:
Thomas (deceased), Tilda Ann Armes, Susan - wife of Rev. Laban Estes, John,
Elijah, William, Wylie, Henry, Jarrett, Florena Parkes and Mary Smith (deceased).
He was a soldier in the Civil War serving in the 15th Illinois Calvary.
His father was Thomas Riddle who lived to be 105 years old and was a dummer
boy under General Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans. This was
extracted from the Benton Republican - June 15, 1915.
