Highway 95Leaving Bryce Canyon, I drove north east, along Hwy 12, past the Capitol Reef National Park, then south along Hwy 95, driving straight into the desert, and ending up at the north side of Lake Powell. Lake Powell was formed by the damming of the Colorado River, just north of the Grand Canyon. These next photos were taken at Hite Overlook.
I watched the 'Planet of the Apes' - the original with Charlston Heston, and the crash landing of the spacecraft occurs in Lake Powell. They land in lake with the tall brown cliffs totally surrounding them.
We look down on Highway 95, a little further on, having dropped a few hundred feet, it winds its way around the lake.
Heading east from Lake Powell, it was classic Wild West landscapes, the road to myself, and red rock country all around. I spent the night at a small motel at Fry's Canyon, magnificent in its isolation, tall red cliffs all round.
