"Perplexed" illustrates what can happen when a physicist is having a difficult time solving a problem. Formulas and equations fill his head; he reaches a state of frustration best described by "papers flying about his head." When that point is reached the best thing for him to do is take a break from working. Coffee is generally a good idea.
