Iranian Lajvardina dish, early 14th century.
Glazed ceramic, diameter 21.2 cm.
Despite its name, no lapis lazuli was used in
the production of Lajvardina (Persian for "lapis lazuli").
However, gold was often used in the decoration of Lajvardina
ware, the gold being hammered into strips, cut up with scissors,
and glued onto the vessel.
